Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 6 Oct 2026, 03:34 · Europe/Bucharest

Gakhov arrives fresh but without a match in Palermo this week, against a Milev who has just won two three-set qualifiers in two days and pushed their only meeting to a deciding set.

Gakhov's 12 first sets from 15 on clay make him the likelier winner over three sets. Of the prices reviewed, only Gakhov to take the opening set at 1.73 carries value; the same 1.73 on the match winner offers nothing, and Milev at 2 is one to leave.

Context

Milev arrives with five sets of competitive clay tennis in the two days before this match, including a three-set win over a higher-ranked opponent, so he carries current rhythm on the surface and a settled feel for the venue. Gakhov takes the court as an alternate rather than a scheduled entrant, and his most recent recorded match was a three-set loss on 29 September, so he has no competitive tennis at this event this week. The contrast is a genuine preparation asymmetry rather than a routine turnaround: one player brings match sharpness and accumulated fatigue from qualifying, the other freshness with less recent competitive evidence. The counterweight is that Milev's route also cost him significant time on court immediately before the first round.
- Milev's Palermo qualifying results were 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 over Oscar Jose Gutierrez and 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 over Daniel Siniakov.
- Milev's win over Siniakov was his second successful qualifying run of 2026.
- The Palermo first-round line lists Milev as a qualifier and Gakhov as an alternate.
ReportedSources checked 6 Oct 2026, 03:32 · Europe/Bucharest
The single recorded meeting between them finished 2-6, 7-6(8), 7-5 to Gakhov, so the only direct evidence on this match-up is a long clay contest settled in the closing games rather than a wide gap in level. Gakhov dropped the opening set comfortably and then took a second-set tie-break and a 7-5 third set, which makes an extended, tight match a reasonable reference for this first round. The limitation is that one meeting at a different event does not establish a repeatable match-up pattern, and it does not describe the conditions or the form both players bring to Palermo.
- The clay meeting finished 2-6, 7-6(8), 7-5 to Gakhov.
- Milev's match record lists the same 2-6, 7-6(8), 7-5 defeat to Gakhov .

Gakhov, a 29-year-old left-hander ranked No. 434, has built his recent clay results on fast starts rather than dominant scoring.
A first round against a qualifier puts a premium on starting well, and Gakhov's opening-set record is the strongest single figure in either player's clay sample. The second-set numbers show the lead has not always been protected, so three sets are plausible even when he takes the first. Six of his nine clay wins came in straight sets, which is the counterweight.
- In 15 completed clay matches from 18 August to 29 September 2026, Gakhov won 12 first sets and lost three, and won seven second sets and lost eight.
- His first sets averaged 9.8 games (5.8 won, 4.0 lost) and his second sets 9.0 games.
- Six of his nine clay wins in that sample were 2-0 scorelines and two of the 15 matches ended 0-2.
Milev, 22 and ranked No. 619, has just come through two three-set qualifying matches in Palermo on 4 and 5 October.
Nine of his 14 clay matches went to a deciding set and he took only four of 14 second sets, so a quick straight-sets result either way looks unlikely on this record. That pattern also means the first round follows five sets of competitive tennis in the two previous days. One retirement was excluded from the 14-match sample, so the totals cover completed matches only.
- Milev is 9-5 across 14 completed clay matches from 5 August to 5 October 2026, with one retirement excluded from the sample.
- Seven of his wins came as 2-1 scorelines and nine of the 14 matches went to a deciding set.
- He won 9 of 14 first sets but only 4 of 14 second sets, with three of the matches containing a tie-break.
