Joaquin Aguilar Cardozo #34222 – 1Lorenzo Joaquin Rodriguez #533Argentina1

The No. 342 player is the higher-ranked man in this pair and has been winning at a heavy rate on clay through late September and early October.

Rodriguez's 8-6 over a comparable number of matches is solid but far less dominant, which is the core reason Aguilar Cardozo starts as the clear favourite. The run includes a 4-6 3-6 loss to No. 224 Alex Barrena on 26 September, so it has not been flawless. The serve and return splits come from 13 of the 15 matches, and the games-won figure covers all 15.

Rodriguez, ranked No. 533, has a workable recent record but nothing close to his opponent's rate of wins.

An 8-6 line is a competitive base rather than a hot streak, the sort of record that can keep a match close without pointing to an upset. No serve, return or points-won splits are available for him, so his game has to be read from results alone. One retired match sits outside the aggregate, which limits how far the 14-match sample can be pushed.

This is the result that keeps the favourite's win from being treated as a formality.

It shows Aguilar Cardozo can be beaten in straight sets by a mid-ranked opponent on clay, which is the strongest argument against assuming his progress here. Rodriguez sits below Barrena in the rankings, so the same argument only carries so far. Nothing in the supplied record explains the defeat beyond the scoreline itself.

Aguilar Cardozo's most recent outing ran to three sets, including a second-set tiebreak lost.

A three-setter on 4 October is a workload note for the day before this match; it does not by itself establish fatigue, especially with only one game dropped in the deciding set. It does mean the favourite arrives off a longer outing than a routine straight-sets win. There is no evidence in this record of any physical problem behind the longer match.
