Two 20-year-olds meet again three weeks after Budkov Kjaer's 6-4 6-4 win at Cassis, this time indoors in the second round at Mouilleron-Le-Captif, with a quarter-final place at stake.

Balshaw's stronger hard-court season — 8-4 in his last 12 completed matches, and better set and point numbers — makes him the narrow pick. The 2.2 on Balshaw is the one price here worth backing; the 1.6 on Budkov Kjaer is not.

Context

The two have met once as professionals, a straight-sets win for Budkov Kjaer in the opening round at Cassis, so the reference point for this tie is recent and specific rather than a long-standing record. That earlier match was played outdoors in a French hard-court Challenger, while this second round is indoors, so only part of the Cassis result carries over. It does show Budkov Kjaer has already handled Balshaw's game in the first round of an event three weeks earlier, which is the most direct evidence available on how the two match up.
- Budkov Kjaer beat Balshaw 6-4 6-4 in the Cassis Challenger first round .
- Cassis is the only recorded professional meeting between the two players.
- The Mouilleron-Le-Captif tie is a second-round match, with the winner reaching the quarter-finals.

Both men completed their opening round, but the loads were unequal: Balshaw's win over Billy Harris ran to three sets with two tiebreaks, while Budkov Kjaer closed out Yanis Ghazouani Durand in straight sets. On an indoor hard court, where a set can turn on a handful of points, the extra set and the two tiebreaks leave Balshaw with more time on court behind him going into the second round. The counterweight is that the gap is a single set, and both players arrive at the second round with the same number of completed matches this week.
- Balshaw beat Billy Harris 7-6(6) 3-6 7-6(3) in the first round .
- Budkov Kjaer beat Yanis Ghazouani Durand 6-3 6-2 on the same day.
- Both first-round matches were played indoors on hard courts.

His first sets in the same 14-match sample are a different story, eight wins to six, so the drop has tended to come after a competitive opener rather than from the start. Against Balshaw, who has won the second set in 7 of his 12 completed hard-court matches since 10 August, that makes the middle set the likeliest place for this tie to turn. He did take the second set in his straight-sets first-round win here on 29 September, so this is a tendency in the record rather than a fixed pattern.
- Budkov Kjaer has won 5 and lost 9 second sets in 14 completed hard-court matches between 1 August and 29 September 2026.
- In the same sample he has won 8 first sets and lost 6, averaging 5.36 games won and 4.79 lost in the opener.
- His second sets average 4.14 games won and 5.14 lost.
- Five of those 14 matches ended as straight-set defeats (0-2).
Balshaw's only Challenger title came three weeks before this tie, at the Rafa Nadal Open in Manacor, where he beat Iñaki Montes-De La Torre in three sets in the final and became the first French winner of the event. It sits behind his position in the top 200 and is the clearest marker of the level he has reached in 2026, which is the context for a second-round meeting with the No. 2 seed. The title run was on outdoor hard courts in Mallorca, however, while this event is played indoors.
- Balshaw beat Iñaki Montes-De La Torre in three sets in the Rafa Nadal Open final .
- It was Balshaw's first ATP Challenger title.
- He is the first French player to win the Rafa Nadal Open.
