Alcaraz opens his Japan Open title defence as top seed against Michelsen, the 21-year-old who reached a first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the US Open and has not played since.

Alcaraz should win, most likely in straight sets, but the prices reviewed - 1.15 to win the match, 1.25 to take the first set, 1.36 for the match to finish in straight sets and 1.55 for an Alcaraz 2-0 win - all ask more than the tennis justifies.

Context

Michelsen's US Open run is the strongest recent evidence of his hard-court level: he reached a first Grand Slam quarterfinal without dropping a set and then led Tiafoe by two sets before losing a 7-6 fifth. That is the form line which makes a first-round meeting with the top seed a legitimate test rather than a formality. The specific limitation is that he has not played a tour match since that defeat, a three-week gap entering his first career meeting with Alcaraz.
- Michelsen reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the 2026 US Open without dropping a set
- He led Frances Tiafoe two sets to love before losing their quarterfinal in five sets

Alcaraz returns to Ariake Coliseum as the defending champion, with 500 ranking points and a title he won at this venue in 2025 at stake from the first match. The draw hands him a hard-hitting opponent who reached the US Open quarterfinal three weeks earlier, and because the two have never met there is no prior read on how Michelsen's serve-first game holds up against Alcaraz's defence. What tempers that is the venue itself: Alcaraz won here last year, so the conditions and surface are familiar even if the opponent is not.
- Alcaraz won the 2025 Japan Open and returns as defending champion and top seed
- Drawn against Michelsen in the first round; the two have never played each other

Alcaraz arrives in Tokyo with a compressed turnaround, having played the Laver Cup in London on 25- and then travelling to Japan for the start of the main draw on 30 September. The weekend still gave him real competitive singles, including a 13-11 deciding set against Fritz in which he saved two match points, so he is not walking in cold after his US Open exit. His Laver Cup load was also light, since he was not used on the deciding day, which makes the travel and time-zone change a larger factor than accumulated fatigue.
- Played the 2026 Laver Cup in London on 25-
- Saved two match points against Taylor Fritz in a 13-11 deciding set

Alcaraz's wider hard-court record is far stronger, with 29 of 41 sets won across the tracked 15-match window, so this three-match slice is a caution about his starts rather than about his level.
The sample is only three matches and five months old, which limits how much weight it carries, but it is the closest thing available to a read on how Alcaraz begins a best-of-three hard-court match. He lost the opening set in two of the three, and Michelsen has won seven of his last ten opening sets in the same format. That combination is why an early break or a tight first set against the top seed would not surprise anyone.
- Three hard-court best-of-3 matches tracked, 14-22 March 2026
- Alcaraz won one of three opening sets and two of three second sets
- First sets averaged 4 games won to 5.3 lost
- Total games averaged 24.3 across the three matches
