Rottgering's hard-court form against Shick's ranking and third seeding is the tension in this Columbus second round.

The 19-year-old left-hander has won 10 of 15 on the surface and looks the likelier winner, most likely in straight sets. No quoted price is worth taking: 1.70 on Rottgering and 1.73 on him for the opening set ask more than his record supports, and 2.05 and 2.00 on Shick do not improve matters.

Context

Rottgering's Winston-Salem week is the clearest evidence that he can beat players well above his ranking, and Machac was No. 75 at the time of that win. It matters here because Shick, at No. 207, is exactly the kind of opponent Rottgering has now shown he can live with, so the 128-place gap in the ATP list does not settle the match by itself. The run ended with a straight-set loss to Arthur Fery, and it came in a single tournament five weeks before this match.
- Rottgering beat Tomas Machac 6-2 7-6(1) at Winston-Salem on 25 August 2026.
- He also beat Hugo Grenier and Jan Choinski there before a 6-3 6-3 loss to Arthur Fery.

Shick, as the third seed, needed three sets to get past Ozan Baris, losing the middle set 0-6 before taking the decider. The scoreline shows he can reset inside a match, which is relevant against a left-hander who has been winning his matches in straight sets and will look to extend rallies. Baris sits outside the top 400, so this reflects Shick's recovery under pressure more than a proven level against a top-350 opponent.
- Shick is the No. 3 seed at the 75-level Columbus Challenger and plays Rottgering in the second round.
- The opening-round win over Baris finished 7-6(4) 0-6 6-3 .

Shick, ranked No. 207 and seeded third here, has been working through long matches in this window rather than closing them out early.
Shick's 13 completed hard-court matches average 24.7 games and include four 2-1 wins and two 1-2 losses, so his sets tend to stay close instead of running away from him. Six of those matches also featured at least one tiebreak. Against an opponent whose wins almost always arrive in two sets, that length keeps Shick in contact but also keeps sets within range of a single break either way.
- Shick's 13 completed hard-court matches tracked from 3 July to 28 September 2026, with one retirement excluded, average 24.7 total games.
- Six of those 13 matches went to a third set (four 2-1 wins, two 1-2 losses) and six featured at least one tiebreak.
- His average sets played on the surface is 2.46.
Rottgering, at a career-high No. 335, has been either quick or beaten in this window, with almost no middle ground.
Rottgering's hard-court scorelines read nine 2-0 wins, five 0-2 losses and a single 2-1 win, an average of 2.07 sets per match. Only one of the 15 matches featured a tiebreak, which points to sets being settled by a break rather than a shootout. For this second round that profile makes a two-set match the likeliest shape; if it does reach a third, the sample contains only one example of him coming through one.
- Rottgering's 15 hard-court matches from 21 July to 28 September 2026 break down as nine 2-0 wins, five 0-2 losses and one 2-1 win.
- He averages 2.07 sets per match, and only one of the 15 went to a tiebreak.
- Nine of his 10 wins on the surface came in straight sets.
