Context last updated 29 Sep 2026, 06:20 · Europe/Bucharest

A rested fourth seed against a qualifier who has already spent more than three hours on the Columbus courts.

Smith, ranked No. 211, is the likelier winner against No. 489 Chan, who is playing only his second Challenger main draw and won here in qualifying. The one quoted price reviewed, Smith at 1.48, offers nothing worth taking.

Context

Chan came through two qualifying rounds on the Columbus courts, beating Keaton Hance 6-3 6-2 after a three-hour 6-7(11) 6-3 7-6(4) win over Denis Petak the previous day, and this is only the second Challenger main draw of his career. He therefore arrives with two competitive matches on the exact courts of this fixture while fourth seed Colton Smith has not played since 24 September. The 21-year-old is still a college player at TCU, which explains how little main-draw experience sits behind the run. The cost is workload: a three-hour opener plus back-to-back qualifying days give him more recent minutes than a rested opponent, and his thin record at this level limits how far the qualifying form should carry.
- Chan beat Denis Petak 6-7(11) 6-3 7-6(4) in a three-hour match, his first singles match since the National Bank Open in Montreal.
- Chan beat Keaton Hance 6-3 6-2 to qualify.
- Columbus is only the second Challenger main draw of Chan's career.
- Chan is listed among the top-ranked current college men while playing for TCU.

Smith carries the fourth seeding at Columbus, the higher-ranked player in this fixture at about No. 210 against a qualifier near No. 490. His most recent evidence is mixed: a 6-4 6-2 win over Stefan Kozlov at San Diego 2, then a 6-3 6-3 loss to qualifier Timo Legout in the round of 16, his last match before a five-day gap. That defeat came at a different venue on the California hard courts, so both the change of event and the layoff sit between it and this match. The seeding, rather than recent results, is what carries the expectation of a higher-ranked player here.
- The confirmed Columbus first-round placement lists Colton Smith as the fourth seed.
- Smith beat Stefan Kozlov 6-4 6-2 in the opening round at San Diego 2, where he was also seeded fourth.
- Smith lost 6-3 6-3 to qualifier Timo Legout in San Diego .
- That Legout match was Smith's last before a five-day gap to this first round.

Chan was named in Canada's Davis Cup squad for the September 2026 tie against France and made his competition debut in the Saturday doubles with Felix Auger-Aliassime, losing 7-6(5) 6-3 to Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Benjamin Bonzi in Quebec City. Selection for a home national-team rubber alongside Canada's leading player shows how he is regarded at this point of his career and frames the Columbus week within a first senior international season. The limitation is format and level: one doubles rubber in a team event does not establish singles form or readiness for a best-of-three Challenger match.
- Chan was included in Canada's four-man squad for the September 2026 Davis Cup tie against France.
- The confirmed draw listed Auger-Aliassime and Chan as Canada's Saturday doubles pair, Chan's Davis Cup debut.
- Chan and Auger-Aliassime lost the doubles rubber 7-6(5) 6-3 to Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Benjamin Bonzi.
- Canada led the tie 2-0 after the Friday singles.

This first round is scheduled third on Court 1, with the bulk of the Columbus field arriving from the previous week's hard-court Challenger in San Diego. Chan is the exception in this pairing because he has already played and won twice on the Columbus courts in qualifying, so the venue and conditions are familiar to him. Smith's advantage is freshness, with no competitive match since, against a qualifier who has logged a three-hour opener plus another match on consecutive days. The contrast matters as preparation and workload rather than as a measured playing edge: more time on site for Chan, more rest for Smith.
- The Chan-Smith first round is placed on Court 1, following Blanch-Maloney and preceding Kozlov-Kim.
- The Columbus main draw opened .
- Smith's previous event was the San Diego 2 Challenger, where he played on 22 and .
- Chan won two qualifying matches on the Columbus courts on 27 and .
