Context last updated 28 Sep 2026, 07:20 · Europe/Bucharest

The higher-ranked, seeded Maxted is the likelier winner, but almost all of his recent hard-court wins came against players ranked 854 or lower, while Potenza has taken ten of twelve opening sets on the surface.

Potenza to win at 2.2 is the one quoted price that offers anything; Maxted's 1.6 needs far more than his form justifies.

Context

Potenza, ranked 538, has been the quicker starter of these two on hard courts in this stretch of the season.
Across twelve completed hard-court matches, Potenza's first sets have been his strength at 10-2, and seven of those matches went the distance. That suggests the opening set is the phase where he has most often been ahead, with the second set — 5-7 in the same window — the one where the advantage has slipped.
- 4 Aug – 27 Sep 2026, 12 completed hard-court best-of-three matches: first sets won 10-2, with 6.17 games won and 4.50 lost per set.
- Same window: second sets 5-7, with 5.00 games won and 5.08 lost per set.
- Seven of the twelve matches went to a deciding set; six of the twelve featured a tiebreak.
Maxted is the higher-ranked player in this pairing, No. 394 against Potenza's No. 538, and he was seeded 11th in the Porto main draw, so he enters the fixture as the more recognised name. His opening match shows both that standing and a wobble: he lost the first set 4-6 to a wildcard ranked 854 before winning the next two 6-3 6-1. It is his only completed match at this event before facing Potenza, so it is the clearest look at his tennis on these courts this week. The wildcard's ranking outside the top 850 makes that a much weaker test than this fixture.
- Eleventh seed Lui Maxted (ATP 394) beat wildcard Francisco Rocha of Portugal (ATP 854).
- The match finished 4-6 6-3 6-1 in Maxted's favour.

The fixture sits inside an ATP Challenger 125, a step above the Portuguese ITF M25 weeks Maxted played in September. The event has drawn a wildcard entry from Grigor Dimitrov, 35, a former world No. 3 and ATP Finals champion with nine ATP titles. That frames how much a deep run in Porto is worth for two players ranked outside the top 350, and marks this as one of the stronger Portuguese weeks on the calendar. Dimitrov's entry does not change the court, the conditions or the draw position of this specific match.
- Grigor Dimitrov is playing the Porto Open, an ATP Challenger 125, in the week of this match.
- The event is billed as the Porto Open 2026 Challenger.

Maxted prepared for Porto at two Portuguese ITF M25 events, reaching the quarterfinals at Sintra and winning two rounds at Setúbal before top seed Inaki Montes-de La Torre, ranked 226, ended his run there. That run of matches in Portugal is the background to his move into a Challenger 125 main draw, where he took a seeding. It means he arrives with recent competitive tennis behind him rather than coming in without match play. The M25 field is a weaker benchmark than this tournament, so the run explains his continuity without settling how he will handle this level.
- Lui Maxted reached the M25 Sintra singles quarterfinals in Portugal.
- Sixth seed Lui Maxted (ATP 394) beat Blu Baker at the M25 Setúbal opening round.
- Sixth seed Lui Maxted (ATP 394) beat Tyler Stice of the USA.
- Sixth seed Lui Maxted (ATP 394) lost to top seed Inaki Montes-de La Torre of Spain (ATP 226).
