Context last updated 27 Sep 2026, 15:24 · Europe/Bucharest

Porto qualifying round one: Marrero Curbelo is 199 ranking places higher but has lost four of his last six, while Potenza has been beating better-ranked men on hard courts, so Potenza is the narrow pick to win and the stronger pick to take the opening set.

The quoted 1.5 and 1.55 on him pay less than that justifies, while the 2.4 on Marrero Curbelo to win is the one price that offers value.

Context

Potenza's most productive week of the recent hard-court stretch was the Mallorca Challenger, where he won three main-draw matches after coming through qualifying, including a quarterfinal win over Edas Butvilas, then ranked No. 195. That week is the clearest recent measure of the level he can hold on a hard court, the surface both players favour in this first-round match. The counterweight is what followed: he has not won a match since, and his latest outing was a qualifying defeat at Saint-Tropez, so the Mallorca form has not carried into Portugal.
- Potenza entered the Mallorca Challenger main draw through qualifying and beat David Jorda Sanchis 7-5 2-6 7-5 in the first round .
- He beat Edas Butvilas 4-6 7-5 7-6(6) in the quarterfinal to reach the semifinal.
- He lost the semifinal 2-6 7-6(2) 7-6(2) to Inaki Montes-De La Torre .
- His most recent match was a 6-7(3) 6-4 6-3 loss to Moez Echargui in Saint-Tropez qualifying .

Potenza's first-set record on hard courts is the most emphatic number in his recent sample.
Potenza has started hard-court matches well, and his edge is clearest in the opening set. Three of those 11 first sets went to tiebreaks and six of the 11 matches included one, so the sets have often been tight rather than one-sided. The sample covers Aug 4 to Sept 20, 2026, and describes a recent run rather than guaranteeing how this match begins.
- Aug 4 to Sept 20, 2026: 11 completed hard-court matches, with the first set won 9 times and lost twice.
- First sets average 6.2 games to 4.5, with three first-set tiebreaks in the 11 matches.
- Six of the 11 matches included a tiebreak, and the matches average 27.1 total games.
The 14-match sample is the fullest part of Marrero Curbelo's file, since no serve or return figures are available for him.
The hard-court record is a winning one, and five of the nine wins needed a third set, so his matches have tended to run long. Only two of the 14 included a tiebreak, which fits the 22.7-game average. His most recent tracked match came on Sept 7, 2026, so this describes his summer rather than his condition this week.
- June 20 to Sept 7, 2026: 14 completed hard-court matches, 9-5, with one further match in that window excluded as a retirement.
- Scoreline split: five wins in three sets and four in straight sets; four defeats in straight sets and one in three.
- Matches average 22.7 total games, with only two of the 14 including a tiebreak.
Marrero Curbelo has not played a tracked completed match since Sept 7, 2026.
The 0-6 third set is the last entry in his record before Porto, coming after he had taken the opening set 6-4. One match cannot establish a pattern, and nothing in the record explains the lopsided set, so it stands as a striking recent result rather than a forecast for this match. The opponent, Maks Kasnikowski, was ranked No. 235.
- Sept 7, 2026, hard court: lost 6-4 5-7 0-6 to Maks Kasnikowski (No. 235), the deciding set going to his opponent without a game.
