Context last updated 23 Sep 2026, 16:21 · Europe/Bucharest

Eighth seed Jay Clarke, ranked 247, meets Giuseppe La Vela, a home wild card at 553 who fought through two tiebreak sets to reach this second round.

Clarke's clay form makes him the likely winner. Where the reviewed prices offer something, it is on La Vela: 3.8 to take the first set, 5.25 to win, 3.8 to take the second; Clarke's 1.15 match price and his 1.22 set prices ask for too much.

Context

Clarke arrived in Genoa straight from a Biella Challenger semifinal, beaten by Alejandro Moro Cañas on 19 September after wins over Jonas Forejtek, Petr Brunclik and Felix Gill. That run, including a win over Gill at No. 211, is the strongest recent evidence of his clay level and explains why he is a seeded entrant despite a ranking near No. 247. The cost is recovery: he had roughly two days between that semifinal and his Genoa first round, and several of his recent clay wins needed a third set, so a long second-round match would test him physically.
- Clarke reached the Biella Challenger semifinal before losing to Alejandro Moro Cañas on 19 September
- His Biella wins came against Jonas Forejtek, Petr Brunclik and Felix Gill

Clarke wins on clay, but rarely without dropping a set.
That pattern matters in a second round against a wild card who has just won two tiebreak sets: Clarke's recent clay results show he wins without much margin and has also lost four of those 12 matches in three sets. His four straight-set wins did come with less strain, so the deciding-set habit is not an iron rule. One retirement was excluded from the 12-match sample, so these are completed matches only.
- Clarke's clay set evidence covers 12 completed matches from 8 July to 22 September 2026
- Scorelines: four 2-0 wins, four 2-1 wins and four 1-2 losses, so eight of 12 matches reached a deciding set
- Clarke's clay matches average 25.7 games and 2.67 sets; one retirement was excluded from the sample
Clarke is the eighth seed in this Genova draw and opened with a 7-5 6-3 win over qualifier John Sperle, a straight-sets route into this round. Seeding matters because he meets a wild card ranked outside the top 550, so the ranking and the entry status both sit with him. Sperle is also ranked around No. 692, so that score says little about Clarke's level against a player with more tour exposure; it mainly confirms a low-cost route into the second round.
- Clarke is listed as the eighth seed in the Genova 2 draw
- He beat qualifier John Sperle 7-5 6-3 in the first round

La Vela, 25, is the Italian wild card in this matchup and reached the second round with a 7-6(6) 7-6(6) win over compatriot qualifier Giovanni Oradini . The wild card followed a failure to qualify for the first Genoa event the previous week, where he lost to Máximo Zeitune, so the entry reflects home-nation allocation rather than a qualifying run of form. Both sets against Oradini went to tiebreaks, which limits how much the win says about his level against a seeded opponent ranked some 300 places above him.
- La Vela entered the Genova 2 main draw on a wild card
- He beat compatriot qualifier Giovanni Oradini 7-6(6) 7-6(6) in the first round
- A week earlier he lost to Máximo Zeitune in qualifying for the first Genoa event
