Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 15 Sep 2026, 15:46 · Europe/Bucharest

Iva Jovic is favored over Zeynep Sonmez based on superior ranking, recent form, and return stats.

Jovic's odds are too short for value, but prop markets like over 3.5 aces offer better opportunities. Sonmez's double fault tendency could be a key factor.

Context

Jovic, 18, is the higher-ranked player at No. 16 and has been more consistent in recent months, including a run to the fourth round at the US Open.
Jovic's 66.7% win rate over the last 15 matches and her 62.5% hard-court record in that span give her a clear edge over Sonmez, who has won only 50% of her recent hard-court matches. However, Sonmez's recent win over Daria Kasatkina shows she can compete with higher-ranked opponents, so the gap is not insurmountable.
- Jovic's last 15 overall record: 10-5 (66.7%); Sonmez's: 8-7 (53.3%).
- Jovic's last 15 hard-court record: 5-3 (62.5%); Sonmez's: 4-4 (50%).
- Jovic is ranked No. 16; Sonmez is ranked No. 58.
Sonmez's recent serving numbers show a weakness in high-pressure moments, with a break point save rate below 54%.
If Jovic can create break opportunities, she is likely to convert them at a high rate, putting Sonmez under constant scoreboard pressure. Sonmez's second serve is also a liability, winning only 45% of points, which could allow Jovic to attack early in rallies.
- Sonmez's break points saved in last 15: 53.6% (74/138).
- Jovic's break points converted in last 15: 49.3% (66/134).
- Sonmez's second serve points won in last 15: 45%.
Jovic, 18, is the No. 2 seed and defending champion in Guadalajara, where she won her first WTA title in 2025.
She starts this second-round match after a first-round bye, while Sonmez has already played and won a completed match. The extra rest and title-defence motivation are minor background factors, not a decisive edge.
- The 2026 tournament preview identifies Jovic as the previous champion returning to defend the title.
- Stored recent sample: 3 wins from 5 tracked matches.

Sonmez reached this round with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Iryna Shymanovich, while Jovic has not yet played in the event. The difference in match rhythm is a small situational note, not a strong signal.
- The current draw places Sönmez into the second round after her straight-sets opening win, while Jovic received a first-round bye.
