Xinran Sun

China

Sun, 16, is the reigning US Open junior champion and the ITF junior world No. 1, and she is making her WTA 1000 main-draw debut in Beijing on a wildcard. Nearly all of her recent matches have come at ITF level on clay, so her senior hard-court profile is barely established.

A 331-place ranking gap says Sawangkaew should win, but she has lost her last two hard-court matches while Sun beat world No.

38 Bucsa on 3 October. Sawangkaew in straight sets is the likelier shape. Only one quoted price offers anything: the match to finish in two sets at 1.5; Sawangkaew to win at 1.73 is close to fair with no edge.

Context

Sun is ranked 415 but has shown she can beat a top-40 opponent on this surface.
The Bucsa win is the strongest single piece of evidence for Sun in this matchup, and it came in her own most recent completed hard-court outing before a 5-7 1-6 loss to world No. 5 Cori Gauff two days later. With only two hard-court matches in the tracked window, it is a promising result inside a very small sample rather than a settled level.
- 3 October 2026: Sun beat Cristina Bucsa (world No. 38) 6-4 7-5 on hard court.
Sawangkaew, the higher-ranked player at No. 84, has played most of her recent hard-court tennis at a brisk two-set length.
That record is why a two-set finish is the more likely shape of this first round. The counterweight is that three of those 14 matches went to a third set and four included a tiebreak, so a longer afternoon is not a remote possibility. Her average of 21.0 total games per match sits just above a 20.5 line.
- 1 August – 17 October 2026: 14 completed hard-court matches, 11 finished in straight sets.
- Average sets per match: 2.21; three of the 14 went to a third set.
- Average total games per match: 21.0; four of the 14 matches included a tiebreak.
Sawangkaew arrives in Guangzhou with a 7-7 hard-court record over the tracked window rather than a run of wins.
A straight-sets loss to a player ranked 21 places below her tempers the 331-place gap to Sun. Across 14 hard-court matches from 1 August to 17 October 2026 her record is 7-7, so the ranking advantage points to a favourite rather than a comfortable one. Sun's own two hard-court matches in that window went in straight sets as well.
- 17 October 2026: lost 3-6 4-6 to Polina Kudermetova (world No. 105) on hard court.
