Context last updated 26 Oct 2026, 03:38 · Europe/Bucharest

The ranking says Janice Tjen (No. 46) should handle Polina Kudermetova (No. 105); the hard-court records say otherwise, with Kudermetova 7-6 while Tjen is 6-9 and has lost in straight sets eight times in 15.

Tjen is still the narrow favourite, but 1.55 asks too much of her. Kudermetova +3.5 games at 1.65, either set at 2.2, the match at 2.4 and over 22.5 games at 2.0 are the prices with something in them.

Context

The 105th-ranked Kudermetova brings the more recent winning habit into this first round.
Three straight-set wins in four days is the best form either player brings here, and two came against opponents ranked inside the top 85. The sample is three matches, and the two defeats before it were one-sided, so it points to a player in rhythm rather than a transformed one. It is best read as a form note: she is finishing matches more cleanly now than at the start of the month.
- 17 Oct 2026: beat Mananchaya Sawangkaew (No. 84) 6-3 6-4
- 18 Oct 2026: beat Anastasia Zakharova (No. 111) 6-3 6-3
- 20 Oct 2026: beat Cristina Bucsa (No. 38) 7-6 6-2
Her recent hard-court results have mostly been settled quickly, and mostly against her.
Only four of her 15 hard-court matches went the distance, which is why a two-set finish is the natural shape of this match. It also means her defeats tend to arrive quickly rather than as attritional three-setters. That cuts both ways for Kudermetova: shorter matches lower the ceiling on total games but give the underdog fewer chances to absorb a bad set.
- Hard-court scorelines over 15 matches, 30 Jul to 19 Oct 2026: 3 wins 2-0, 3 wins 2-1, 8 defeats 0-2, 1 defeat 1-2
- Average sets per match 2.27, average total games 23.1
- Two-set matches: 11 of 15
Tjen's serve is the most clearly measured weapon in either player's record.
The 69.4% first-serve figure is high for a 15-match sample and gives her a free-point route that the available record does not show Kudermetova matching. The 44% on second serve is the opening: opponents who return deep and extend rallies have found a way in. It makes the quality of her first delivery the thing to watch on the important points.
- First-serve points won 69.4% (476 of 686) over 15 hard-court matches, 30 Jul to 19 Oct 2026
- 5.7 aces and 4.0 double faults per match over the same 15 matches
- Second-serve points won 44.0% (213 of 484)
- Total points won 48.6% (1099 of 2262)
Her winning run sits alongside two recent matches where she was barely in the contest.
Both losses came against top-75 opposition and both were over in two sets, with only three and five games won respectively. It is the clearest warning against reading her October wins as steady improvement. Tjen, ranked 46, sits in that same bracket, so a short and one-sided match is a live possibility rather than a remote one.
- 10 Oct 2026: lost to Katie Volynets (No. 73) 2-6 1-6
- 4 Oct 2026: lost to Mirra Andreeva (No. 3) 4-6 1-6
- Both defeats completed in two sets, 3 and 5 games won
