Context last updated 27 Oct 2026, 03:05 · Europe/Bucharest

Two similarly ranked hard-courters meet indoors in Courmayeur, with Marina Bassols Ribera the marginal pick over left-hander Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva.

Her 5-5 hard-court record and higher ranking edge a 3-5 opponent, and a straight-sets finish is the likelier shape. The quoted prices do not reward it: Bassols Ribera at 1.65 and fewer than three sets at 1.5 both ask more than the tennis here supports.

Context

Bassols Ribera comes into Courmayeur off a straight-set loss to a player ranked almost 500 places below her.
A 5-12 games loss to a player ranked 621 is the result that most complicates Bassols Ribera's ranking edge in this first round. It is one match rather than a trend, and her wider ten-match hard-court sample is 5-5. It does mean her most recent level is not clearly ahead of Jimenez Kasintseva's 3-5.
- 23 October 2026: lost to Jodie Burrage (ranked 621) 1-6, 4-6 on indoor hard, five games to twelve.
Her hard-court sets have stayed close without ever reaching a tiebreak.
Every one of the eight recorded matches was settled without a shootout, and both sets averaged close to even games. That points to tight sets decided by a single break rather than tiebreaks. Two retirements were excluded from the sample, so this is a pattern to note rather than a reliable rate.
- Eight completed hard-court matches, 1 August to 22 October 2026: no tiebreaks; set one games 4.125-4.375, set two games 4.25-4.625.
- Two retirements excluded from the eight-match aggregate.
Her recent hard-court matches have mostly been compact, two-set affairs with little separating the games.
Seven of Bassols Ribera's ten completed hard-court matches ended in two sets, split between three wins and four defeats. Her game totals in that window are almost level: 101 won, 104 lost. The pattern supports the idea of a short match here, though the sample covers 1 August to 23 October and is not large.
- Ten completed hard-court matches, 1 August to 23 October 2026: average 2.3 sets and 20.5 games; scorelines 3x 2-0, 2x 2-1, 4x 0-2, 1x 1-2.
- Games in that sample: 101 won, 104 lost; two of the ten matches contained a tiebreak.
