Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 22 Oct 2026, 21:10 · Europe/Bucharest

Bublik has not played a point in Almaty, while Khachanov needed five saved match points and 2h32m to get here.

That contrast, plus Khachanov's 7-2 first-set record on hard courts from 14 August to 22 October, makes him the slightly likelier winner. The 1.95 for Khachanov to take the first set and the 2.00 for him to win the match both leave a little room; Bublik at 1.80 to win, and 1.75 for the first set, do not.

Context

Khachanov spent 2h32m on court and saved five match points in the deciding tiebreak, while Bublik has not played since a deciding-tiebreak loss in Shanghai on 13 October because his second round became a walkover. That is a ten-day competitive gap against a man who was on court into the evening the day before, and it is the clearest structural difference between the two in this fixture. Freshness favours Bublik, but the same gap removes any read on his form and rhythm on this court, and Khachanov's 14 aces in the previous round show his serve came through the pressure intact.
- Marozsán withdrew before facing Bublik in the second round, giving Bublik a walkover.
- Khachanov beat Macháč 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(9-7) in 2h32m, saving five match points and hitting 14 aces.
- Bublik, the third seed, had a first-round bye and has not played a match in Almaty this week.
- Bublik's last completed match was a deciding-tiebreak loss in Shanghai on 13 October.

Almaty is the one week where Bublik plays in front of a home crowd, and it is only the tournament's third edition in the city; its two champions, Khachanov in 2024 and Medvedev in 2025, were both visitors, so a home title remains unclaimed. He is the only Kazakh left in the draw and holds the highest seed in the bottom half behind Medvedev. Support is not a measurable playing input, and Bublik's level has swung widely across hard-court weeks this season, so the crowd explains the occasion more than the outcome.
- Bublik represents Kazakhstan and is seeded third in Almaty.
- Bublik is the only Kazakh player in the eight-man quarterfinal line-up.
- Khachanov won the title in 2024 and Medvedev in 2025, the tournament's two Almaty editions.
- Bublik is the second-highest ranked player in the bottom half behind top seed Medvedev.

Khachanov won here in 2024 on the same indoor hard court at Almaty Arena, where the ball carries at roughly 800 metres and the bounce stays low, the surface profile his flat, early-strike patterns suit. That reference week matters in this comparison because Bublik, for all his home support, has no comparable title at this venue. The title is two seasons old and Khachanov arrived this week outside the top 20, so it explains comfort with the conditions rather than current form.
- Khachanov won the Almaty Open title in 2024.
- The tournament's 2024 champion advanced past the opening round this week.
- Medvedev, the top seed, is the defending champion.
- Khachanov is seeded fifth in the 2026 draw.

A US Open semifinal in September is the best result either player brings into this week, and it sits inside a run of 11 wins in 15 matches rather than standing alone. It matters because a No. 25 ranking places Khachanov below the level he showed in New York, where he beat Auger-Aliassime and Tien before losing to Zverev, the same man who ended Bublik's Shanghai week. Grand Slam form over five sets does not transfer directly to a 250 quarterfinal, and his two most recent defeats both came in straight sets.
- Khachanov reached the 2026 US Open semifinals.
- He beat Auger-Aliassime and Tien during that run before losing to Zverev in September.
- He has won 11 of his last 15 matches.
