Context last updated 21 Oct 2026, 06:10 · Europe/Bucharest

Houkes brings 13 wins from his last 14 clay matches into this second round, but Ribecai stays in reach: he beat the top seed 6-1 6-1 in Palermo, and Houkes needed three sets in his opener eight days after a two-hour-43-minute final in Kigali.

Houkes in straight sets is the likeliest shape. At 1.60 to win, 1.65 for either of the first two sets and 2.40 for 2-0, the prices are worth the risk; Ribecai at 2.20 is not.

Context

The title followed a fortnight in Kigali in which he also reached the semi-final of the first week, and it extended a run of 14 wins in 15 clay matches, the only defeat coming against Lock. Winning the same event in successive seasons shows continuity on clay rather than one isolated week. The limitation is the level: an M25 field sits below this 50-level Challenger, and the final itself cost him three sets and nearly three hours before a flight to Italy.
- Houkes took the Kigali final 6-2 6-7(4) 7-5 in two hours 43 minutes
- It was his second Rwanda Open M25 title at the IPRC Kigali courts
- He had lost the semi-final of the previous Kigali week to Benjamin Lock in three sets

Dismissing the top seed while conceding two games is the clearest evidence in Ribecai's recent record that he can beat a higher-ranked opponent on clay, the surface used here in Florence. It also shows he is a regular at Challenger quarter-final level this season rather than a one-week arrival. The counterpoint is that he did not convert the week: he took the first set 6-1 against Forejtek and lost the next two, including a deciding tiebreak.
- Ribecai beat the top seed Kolar 6-1 6-1 in the Palermo round of 16
- It was his sixth Challenger quarter-final of the 2026 season
- He lost the quarter-final to Forejtek 6-1 1-6 7-6(5) on 9 October

Houkes' clay edge has been front-loaded: 11 of 14 opening sets won, with only three tiebreaks in that set. The second-set numbers are stronger still at 12 of 14, and together they help explain nine 2-0 wins in the same 14 matches. Ribecai has lost three of his four opening sets on clay, which is where the gap could open first.
- Houkes won 11 of 14 opening sets on clay between 9 September and 19 October 2026, averaging 5.9 games to 3.3.
- He won 12 of 14 second sets in the same 14 matches, averaging 5.9 games to 2.9.
- Five of the 14 matches contained a tiebreak, three of them in the opening set.
- Nine of the 14 matches finished 2-0, four finished 2-1 and one was a 1-2 defeat.
Ribecai comes into this round of 16 having played 22 games in Florence, closer to a straight-set outing than a full three-setter, which leaves him with a lighter competitive load than a conventional opening win. That matters against an opponent whose own opener went the full distance. The read on Ribecai's level is limited, however: he dropped the first set and the match finished with Vasami's retirement, so the win establishes advancement rather than form.
- Vasami retired with Ribecai leading 4-2 in the third set, the score reading 4-6 6-0 4-2
- Ribecai won 10 of the last 12 games played in the match
- The match lasted 22 games in total before the retirement
