Goffin's farewell week, with a home crowd behind him, meets No. 5 seed Michelsen indoors.

Michelsen is the likelier winner — No. 37 against No. 657, and he dropped three games in his first round — but 1.05 pays almost nothing for a player who has needed a third set in four of his 10 hard-court best-of-three matches. Over 21.5 games at 2.6, over 2.5 sets at 4 and Goffin to win at 10 are the three prices the record supports.

Context

Goffin's No. 657 ranking is the product of a year spent in Challengers and qualifying, so a tour-level win over a top-220 opponent is the first evidence this week that his level still holds at ATP 250 pace. It cost him more than two hours and three sets on the day before this match, against a lucky loser rather than a seed. The result therefore says more about his durability and willingness to compete than about his ability to hold serve against a top-40 returner, which is the test Michelsen sets.
- Goffin trailed 3-0 in the deciding set and faced a point that would have left him two breaks down
- He broke at 4-4 and served out the match after more than two hours
- His previous ATP main-draw victory had come more than a year earlier

The crowd is part of the conditions here rather than background: Goffin named it as the most important part of a win that had been one set from ending his career, and asked for the goodbye to be delayed again. Palais 12 stages this second round too, so a retiring home wildcard plays with the building behind him, which raises the stakes of an otherwise lopsided ranking matchup. What it cannot do is close the serve-and-return gap to a top-40 seed, and Goffin's framing of the week is ceremonial rather than a push for ranking points, so the atmosphere explains his engagement more than his chance of winning.
- Goffin said the support from first point to last was the most important thing
- He asked to postpone the retirement ceremony by three or four more matches
- Belgian coverage described the Palais 12 crowd carrying him through the first round

Two matches in one day at 35, after a three-set win the previous afternoon, is the clearest physical asymmetry in the fixture: Michelsen has played once in Brussels, dropping three games in a 6-1, 6-2 win on 19 October. Best-of-three indoor matches are short, so accumulated fatigue is more likely to surface in a third set than in the opening games. The limit is that the doubles comes after the singles, so the cost is carried into the match rather than divided across it, and the order of play is a listing that can shift.
- Goffin and Collignon reached the doubles quarter-finals in Brussels
- The doubles quarter-final against Frantzen and Galloway is scheduled after the singles
- Goffin spent more than two hours on court in the first round

A first major quarter-final at 21 is the strongest recent result either player owns, and it came on the hard courts this event also uses. It arrived with a cost: two sets up against Tiafoe, he lost the fifth-set tiebreak, the kind of defeat that shapes a young player's next stretch of tournaments. The limitation is that the run is six weeks old and was followed by two defeats, so it describes his ceiling rather than his current level indoors.
- Michelsen beat Brandon Nakashima and Tomás Martín Etcheverry on the way to the quarter-finals
- He lost the quarter-final to Tiafoe in five sets after leading by two sets
- He is the No. 5 seed in Brussels
