Pre-match view

Context last updated 22 Oct 2026, 20:42 · Europe/Bucharest

Comesana came in ranked No. 130 with the stronger clay numbers, but the Cali second round turned on his leg: he took the first set 6-2, lost the second in a tiebreak and retired at 0-0 in the third, sending Zarate through.

Before that, Zarate at 5.75 to win the match, 4.0 for the first set and 3.8 for the second were the prices that offered value.

Context

The leg problem, not the tennis, settled this second round: Comesana had taken the opening set 6-2 and was still level in the match before the tiebreak went against him, then could not begin the third. His withdrawal leaves his entries for the closing weeks of the South American clay swing open and removes the third seed from the top half of the Cali draw. No diagnosis has been published, so the length of any absence is unknown; what is established is a mid-match timeout on the leg area and a retirement at 0-0 in the third.
- Comesana received a medical timeout for treatment on his leg at 1-2 in the second set
- He retired with the match level at 0-0 in the third set after dropping the second-set tiebreak 7-6(5)
- He stopped while struggling to move and did not contest the third set
- Zarate advanced to the last eight in Cali

For a player ranked No. 352 whose ranking points have come mostly from ITF events, a second Challenger quarter-final is the clearest marker yet of where his level currently sits. The step is real but narrow: the second round was decided by retirement, and five days earlier he had lost his previous Challenger match 6-2 6-2 to Thiago Seyboth Wild in Santa Cruz. Meligeni Alves, who needed two sets to beat Dedura, is the next test of whether the week holds.
- Zarate reached the second Challenger quarter-final of his career
- Meligeni Alves beat Diego Dedura 6-4 6-2 to reach the same quarter-final
- Zarate entered Cali ranked No. 352 and opened with a straight-set win over qualifier Franco Ribero

Cali's clay has been wet and the schedule has rolled from one day into the next, so players have been preparing for matches that start hours late or resume the following morning. That matters for a second round sitting behind completed and suspended matches on the same courts, where start times move and a player can be held through a long delay. The surface itself is ordinary outdoor clay, so the effect is on timing, rhythm and warm-up rather than on how the court plays.
- Play was suspended with matches unfinished
- Jarry's match against Pucinelli de Almeida was carried over to
- Bueno's match against Santiago Rodriguez Taverna stopped at 6-7(12) 6-4 1-1 and resumed the next day
- More storms were forecast for the remainder of the tournament week
ConfirmedSources checked 22 Oct 2026, 20:40 · Europe/Bucharest
The stoppage was resolved within the day, but it compounded a week already disrupted by storms and suspended matches, and Thursday's programme started late as a result. For the players that means less predictable warm-up and court availability rather than any change in the conditions. The dispute concerned the promoter's debts from a different event in a different city, so it carries no bearing on either player's standing in this draw.
- Line judges declined to work international matches at the Cali Challenger over unpaid fees
- The arrears dated from the WTA 125 event in Barranquilla at the end of August
- Organisers paid the officials one by one and play resumed
- Thursday's order of play began later than scheduled
