Context last updated 18 Oct 2026, 04:32 · Europe/Bucharest

A home sixth seed fresh from beating Alcaraz against a late call-up ranked No. 100 who has won 10 of his last 14.

Bergs should win, but 1.44 for him is short given a 7-6 hard-court record and a draw he does not dominate. The price that holds up is 1.55 for the match to finish in straight sets: 15 of the pair's 22 hard-court best-of-three matches ended in two.

Context

A straight-sets win over the world No. 3 is the most notable result of Bergs's 2026 season and the clearest recent measure of his level. It came at a cost: four matches in seven days in Shanghai, ending with the 7-6(5) 6-4 loss to Tommy Paul, five days before this first round. In that match he held break points at 5-5 in the first set and at 3-4 in the second, so the week closed at a high level without converting. Consistency is the limitation: his other hard-court results in the preceding two months include a three-set loss to Jiri Lehecka and a straight-sets defeat by Daniel Merida Aguilar.
- Bergs beat Alcaraz 7-5 7-6(4) in Shanghai .
- He lost 7-6(5) 6-4 to Tommy Paul there, in the round of 16.
- Against Paul he held break points at 5-5 in the first set and at 3-4 in the second.
- He played four matches in seven days in Shanghai, beating Vit Kopriva and Ignacio Buse before facing Alcaraz and Paul.

The reshuffle makes Samuel's first Brussels appearance a main-draw match against the sixth seed with no qualifying rounds to find rhythm; he has not competed since the Villena loss . It also thins the field, with the defending champion and two other main-draw entrants gone, so Bergs at No. 39 is one of the strongest players left. The counterweight sits in Samuel's record: all 11 of his wins in the last 15 matches came against players ranked No. 75 or below, and his most recent defeats were to No. 249, No. 288 and No. 16.
- Samuel was listed in Brussels qualifying before and moved into the main draw that day.
- Felix Auger-Aliassime, Casper Ruud and Benjamin Bonzi came out of the main draw .
- Samuel's most recent match was a 7-6(11) 6-3 first-round loss to Hynek Barton at the Villena Challenger .
- Samuel is ranked No. 100, having been at No. 109 in early August 2026.

Bergs's advantage has tended to arrive later in matches than at the start of them.
Bergs won four of 10 first sets on hard between 5 August and 14 October 2026 but seven of 10 second sets, so his edge has tended to arrive after the opening exchange. Samuel can take an early lead without controlling the match. The opening set is the least predictable part of this first round.
- Bergs won 4 of 10 first sets in hard-court best-of-three matches from 5 August to 14 October 2026.
- He averaged 4.9 games won and 4.9 lost in those first sets, with two tiebreaks.
- He won 7 of 10 second sets in the same sample, averaging 5.2 games to 4.3.
Machac, at No. 75, is the highest-ranked opponent in Samuel's six listed recent matches, and Samuel lost only seven games. It is the clearest sign he can hold a top-100 level over three sets. The result is six weeks old, so it says more about his ceiling than his current rhythm.
- Samuel beat Tomas Machac, ranked No. 75, 6-2 6-3 6-2 on 30 August 2026 on hard.
- He won 18 games to 7 in that match.
- The match sits inside a 14-match last-15 sample in which Samuel is 10-4.
