Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 18 Oct 2026, 06:18 · Europe/Bucharest

Tsitsipas has the stronger hard-court numbers, but he has played eight matches in three weeks and faces a Kovacevic idle for 12 days who beat him in two sets in August.

Tsitsipas is the likelier winner, and two sets are more likely than three. 1.3 for the match, 1.36 for the first set and 1.36 for the second set are not worth backing; Kovacevic at 3.5 to win, 2.9 for the first set and 2.9 for the second set are the prices with a case.

Context

The match shows Kovacevic can hold serve against Tsitsipas across two sets: one break decided the first set and Tsitsipas managed a single point in the second-set tiebreak. Eight weeks on, the result looks more like a one-off than a matchup pattern, because Kovacevic lost his next match to Fery and has not won a tour-level match since. It still removes any novelty for Tsitsipas, who knows the American can hurt him on a fast hard court and who no longer has a lower-ranked opponent to solve from scratch.
- Kovacevic took the opening set with a single break and then won the second-set tiebreak 7-1, closing the match without conceding a set.
- Kovacevic lost his next match at the same tournament to Arthur Fery, 3-6 7-5 6-3, and has not won a tour-level match since.
- The two had met once before, in 2022, so this is their only completed match in four years.

The recovery gap is lopsided for a first-round match: Tsitsipas finished a Masters fourth round on 14 October and then travelled from Shanghai, while Kovacevic has been idle since and should start the fresher of the two. Eight matches in 19 days is the kind of load that shows up in first-serve percentages and long opening sets, and Tsitsipas chose to enter a 250 rather than rest. No current report describes a physical problem for either player, so the schedule and the arrival date are the only established facts, and fatigue remains an inference rather than a stated condition.
- Tsitsipas came through Tokyo qualifying, beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the main draw, lost to Valentin Vacherot, then won three matches in Shanghai.
- Tsitsipas posted his arrival in Kazakhstan, two days before the first round.
- Kovacevic won the opening set of his Shanghai opener on a tiebreak before losing 6-1 6-4 to Matteo Berrettini.

Beating the world No. 12 from a set down is the strongest hard-court result Tsitsipas has produced in this stretch, and it came in the same week he had won two earlier rounds without losing a set. The counterweight is the fourth round: Medvedev beat him in straight sets in 84 minutes without facing a break point, so the fortnight ended with Tsitsipas's return game under pressure rather than his serve dictating. Almaty's indoor hard court rewards the first-strike serving that worked against Fritz, which is why the run is relevant despite the way it ended.
- Tsitsipas reached the Fritz match without dropping a set, beating Kimmer Coppejans 6-3 7-5 and Luciano Darderi 6-3 6-4.
- Medvedev won in 84 minutes and did not face a break point.
- Fritz was the highest-ranked opponent Tsitsipas beat during the Shanghai fortnight.

The ranking line explains the mismatch a reader sees between the name and the number: Tsitsipas is playing closer to his old level than No. 43 implies, and his 2026 results are a poor guide to what he now produces week to week. The improvement is also partial, since neither the Gstaad title nor the US Open run came above 250 level or returned him to the top 20. It matters for this fixture because a first-round draw at a 250 is now a match he is expected to control, which changes the stakes on a single bad set.
- The Gstaad title ended a 16-month drought and was followed by a US Open second week and further deep runs during the Asian swing.
- His ranking sits 40 places below the career-high No. 3 he reached in August 2021.
