A 20-year-old qualifier with two matches on the Almaty courts against a top-30 seed who has not competed since 13 October.

Sakamoto's Shanghai fortnight makes him a live opponent, though Khachanov's US Open semifinal is the higher ceiling. Sakamoto is the pick to edge it, and the prices agree: 2.75 to win, 2.3 for the first set and 2.3 for the second. A two-set finish is the other lean, with no reviewed price.

Context

The Shanghai fortnight is the only tour-level evidence of Sakamoto's current level, and it is unusually specific: a qualifier ranked 137 beating a top-25 seed in straight sets, then losing a first-set tie-break to the world No. 9. It matters here because Khachanov's flat power and first-strike serving pose the same problems Rublev posed on a quick hard court, and Sakamoto answered them over two sets. The counterweight is the sample: two weeks of tour-level tennis against a ranking outside the top 130, and a de Minaur match he lost in straight sets.
- Sakamoto qualified for the Rolex Shanghai Masters main draw in October 2026 and beat the 23rd seed Andrey Rublev 6-4 6-4.
- The win put him in the round of 32 at a Masters 1000 for the first time in his career.
- He had been 0-5 against top-50 opponents before that match.
- He lost his next match to ninth seed Alex de Minaur 6-7(6) 4-6 on 11 October.

The preparation paths diverge: Sakamoto has two completed matches in the Almaty arena, including a three-set comeback, while Khachanov arrives after six days without competition following a straight-set Shanghai exit. On a faster indoor hard court where serve rhythm and return timing are the main currency, time in the building is the more concrete advantage, and Sakamoto also had to solve a big server in Diallo. The limit on that read is the opposition: a wildcard ranked 618 and a qualifier ranked 121, not a top-30 opponent, and the three-setter left Sakamoto with roughly two hours more work in his legs.
- Sakamoto beat Amir Omarkhanov 6-2 6-1 in the Almaty qualifying first round on 17 October 2026.
- He beat Gabriel Diallo 2-6 6-4 6-4 in the qualifying final, recovering from a set down.
- Khachanov lost 3-6 4-6 to Alex de Minaur in the Shanghai round of 16 on 13 October 2026.
- Khachanov has not played a match between that defeat and this Almaty opener.

Khachanov's best tennis of 2026 came on hard courts in best-of-five, and the two tie-break sets he took off Zverev in the semifinal are a higher reference point than anything in Sakamoto's record. That matters because Almaty's indoor conditions reward exactly the serve-plus-forehand patterns that carried the New York run, and because a top-30 seed entering a 250 after a Slam semi is normally the stronger side of this kind of matchup. The qualification is recency: since New York he has lost in the Beijing quarterfinals and in Shanghai's last 16 without winning a set in either defeat.
- Khachanov won five matches at the 2026 US Open, including a five-set win over Learner Tien.
- He lost the semifinal to Alexander Zverev 3-6 6-7(7) 6-7(6).
- He lost his Beijing quarterfinal to Hubert Hurkacz 7-6(2) 6-2 on 4 October 2026.
- He has not reached a semifinal since New York.

Sakamoto has finished nine of 13 recent hard-court best-of-three matches in two sets, and Khachanov has been beaten in straight sets in four of nine. The counterweight is that two of Sakamoto's 13 were 0-2 defeats, so the same pattern can cut against him.
- Sakamoto's hard-court best-of-three set evidence covers 13 completed matches from 24 August to 18 October 2026.
- Seven of those matches finished 2-0 in his favour, three 2-1, two 0-2 and one 1-2.
- Nine of the 13 therefore ended in straight sets.
