Context last updated 19 Oct 2026, 03:30 · Europe/Bucharest

A qualifier ranked 92 against a fresher No.

59: Maya Joint's 8-6 hard-court record and two Osaka qualifying wins make her the narrow favourite over Zeynep Sonmez, but Sonmez's higher ranking and extra rest keep the first round close. No price was put forward, so there is nothing to recommend at a price.

Context

Joint has played three matches in four days, finishing qualifying with a three-setter, while Sönmez has been idle since and had a full week to prepare. Sharpness on these courts therefore belongs to the qualifier and freshness to the higher-ranked player. The qualifying wins came against opponents ranked 244 and 119, a level below Sönmez's weekly opposition, so the advantage is in match rhythm rather than proven level. Sönmez's own last outing was a three-set loss, which cuts against reading her extra rest as a clear gain.
- Joint beat Kyoka Okamura 6-4 6-2 and Kayla Day 6-3 3-6 6-3 in Osaka qualifying.
- Sönmez entered the main draw directly and last played, losing 6-7(1) 6-3 7-5 to Yulia Putintseva in Wuhan.
- The Osaka main draw runs from 19 to 25 October at the Morita Tennis Center in Utsubo.

The Wuhan match is the useful reference: Sönmez took the opening set on a tie-break and stayed with a seasoned opponent to 5-7 in the decider rather than being outclassed. Across Beijing and Wuhan the pattern is that qualifying wins have not carried into main-draw results during the Asian swing. Osaka is a WTA 250 rather than a 1000, which softens the comparison without removing it.
- Sönmez beat Anastasia Zakharova and Sinja Kraus in Wuhan qualifying without dropping a set.
- Putintseva won 6-7(1) 6-3 7-5 in Wuhan .
- Sönmez lost her Beijing opener 6-4 6-4 to Maddison Inglis on 30 September.

That run is the clearest recent evidence that Joint's level sits above her No. 92 ranking, which is far below the career-high No. 28 she reached in February. It also explains why a former top-30 player had to qualify in Osaka. The counterweight is timing: the final was three weeks ago and was followed by a first-round loss in Beijing to Sinja Kraus in three sets.
- Joint lost the Seoul final 6-4 6-2 to Kimberly Birrell .
- She had two WTA titles from 2025 and was playing for a third.
- Before Seoul she had recorded eight wins in 2026.

The win is what identifies Joint beyond her ranking and sits beside her 2025 titles as the basis for the top-30 standing she held earlier this year. It says little about current form, because she won few matches afterwards and has since fallen to No. 92. It also came on grass, which limits its read-across to a hard-court first round in Osaka.
- Williams returned to Wimbledon singles in July 2026 after almost four years away and saved a match point in the second-set tiebreak.
- Joint won the match in three sets.
- The result is listed among Joint's eight wins in 2026 before Seoul.
