Pre-match view

Context last updated 18 Oct 2026, 04:47 · Europe/Bucharest

Two clay players with losing records meet in Florence, and the gap is narrow: Jianu, ranked 289, has the better clay results, while Romano's long first sets and higher first-set games average keep it close.

Jianu is the likelier winner, and both 1.9 quotes on him, the match and the first set, offer a small edge. The 1.8 on Romano does not.

Context

Romano's clay record is the least settled part of his case for this fixture: two wins from eleven matches on the surface in the tracked window, with the most recent success on 10 August. The Maia defeat fitted that pattern in its margins as well as its outcome, a first set lost in a tie-break before a 6-3 second set. A six-day gap gave him more rest than most of his recent weeks but no match play on the surface, so his Florence opener rests on a form line that has produced little on clay and considerably more on hard courts in late September.
- Andrej Nedic, ranked No. 244, beat Filippo Romano, ranked No. 306, 7-6(2) 6-3 in the Maia Challenger first round
- The Maia match was played on clay, leaving Romano without a clay-court win since 10 August 2026
- Romano has won two of his last eleven matches on clay

Jianu's preparation is unusually continuous for a player at this ranking: every tracked match since 20 August has been on clay, and his previous week was spent on the same surface in Italy, one tournament ahead of Florence. That matters for a player whose career is built on clay and whose hard-court results are largely absent from the recent record, since he arrives without a surface adjustment in front of him. The Catania week also sets a level check: the win came against a player ranked No. 587, and Kolar, ranked No. 196, took the second-round match for the loss of six games, so recent clay results have not yet included a win over ranked opposition inside the top 200.
- Filip Jianu, ranked No. 289, beat Federico Iannaccone, ranked No. 587, 6-3 6-4 in the Catania Challenger first round
- Zdenek Kolar, ranked No. 196, beat Jianu 6-4 6-2 in the Catania round of 16, advancing to the quarter-finals
- All 15 of Jianu's tracked matches since 20 August 2026 have been played on clay

Romano, ranked No. 306, has two clay wins from eleven tracked matches and arrives after six days without a match.
Romano has been competitive early on clay without winning the sets that matter: four of his eleven first sets went to a tiebreak and he still lost nine of the eleven. That keeps the opening set closer than the overall records imply, even though Jianu has taken four of twelve clay first sets to Romano's two of eleven.
- In 11 completed clay matches from 30 June to 13 October 2026, Romano's first sets averaged 10.9 games and four included a tiebreak.
- He won two of those 11 first sets and lost nine.
- Seven of the 11 matches finished 0-2 and five of the 11 contained a tiebreak.
Jianu, ranked No. 289, has played every tracked match since 20 August on clay, moving from Catania to Florence without a surface change.
Jianu's clay results have been settled quickly either way, which makes a two-set finish (under 2.5 sets, 76%) the firmest additional lean here. It also argues against a long, grinding match: only one of his twelve clay matches featured a tiebreak, and his matches averaged 18.7 games.
- Jianu's 12 completed clay matches between 20 August and 14 October 2026 produced 11 straight-set finishes: four 2-0 wins and seven 0-2 losses.
- Only one of the 12 matches contained a tiebreak, and his matches averaged 18.7 total games.
- Three further clay matches in the window ended in retirement and are excluded from these figures.
