Pre-match view

Context last updated 18 Oct 2026, 04:00 · Europe/Bucharest

Guangzhou's first round sets a 518-place ranking gap against Te's Shanghai win over No.

98 Adam Walton and Hewitt's loss to No. 864 Egor Pleshivtsev. Hewitt is still narrowly the likelier winner, probably in straight sets, because he has the better hard-court record and Te has lost four of five. The 1.45 for Hewitt to take the first set is not worthwhile: it demands a clearer early edge than either player's first-set record supports.

Context

The Walton comeback is the clearest evidence of what Te, ranked No. 849, can produce on Chinese hard courts, and it came on the same surface and in the same swing as this Guangzhou week. It sits against a 1-6 record in his last seven outdoor hard-court matches, with six of his seven wins in the last 15 coming indoors in late August, so it reads as a single peak rather than a trend. The result also required three sets against a player ranked 751 places above him, and the immediate follow-up against Simakin lasted two sets.
- Te beat No. 98 Adam Walton 5-7 6-3 6-4 at the Shanghai Masters, his only win over a top-100 opponent in his last 15 matches.
- Te lost 6-3 6-2 to Ilia Simakin the following day in Shanghai.
- Te was beaten 6-2 6-3 by Arthur Gea in Beijing ATP 500 qualifying in late September while ranked No. 849.

Hewitt's most recent evidence is a straight-sets loss to a player ranked more than 500 places below him, three days out, and his best win across his last 15 matches is over No. 413 Sebastian Gorzny on 24 August. His hard-court record in that stretch is 9-6, but every other win came against opponents ranked No. 457 or lower, so the 518-place gap to Te is not supported by wins over higher-ranked opposition. The Shanghai defeat to Coleman Wong was his only match against a top-101 player in the run and lasted two sets. At 17 he is still alternating ITF and Challenger weeks, which makes one M25 result a snapshot rather than a verdict, but he arrives without a win over a top-400 opponent since August.
- Hewitt lost 6-4 7-5 to Egor Pleshivtsev (No. 864) on 16 October, three days before the Guangzhou first round.
- Hewitt beat Yaojie Zeng (No. 893) 6-1 6-3 on 15 October and Jordan Chiu 6-1 6-2 on 14 October at the same ITF event.
- Hewitt lost 6-4 6-1 to Chak Lam Coleman Wong (No. 101) at the Shanghai Masters on 5 October.

That pattern makes a straight-set finish the more likely shape here, though the sample is only 14 matches. Five of those straight-set results were losses, so the record says more about match length than about who wins. It supports expecting few three-set turns, not a guaranteed win in straight sets.
- Hewitt's 14 completed hard-court best-of-three matches from 6 August to 16 October 2026 included 12 straight-set finishes: seven 2-0 wins and five 0-2 losses.
- His total-games average in that sample was 20.2, and only one of his eight wins went to a third set.
A 75-level hard-court draw is the level at which a No. 331 17-year-old and a No. 849 home player actually meet, and the 518-place ranking gap is the structural fact of the matchup. Guangzhou staged a Challenger in mid-September as well, won by Marat Sharipov, which shows the city's hard courts were in competitive use a month before this week. Neither player appeared in that edition, so there is no shared evidence of how either game maps to these conditions, and no court-speed or scheduling detail is established beyond the surface.
- The Guangzhou Nansha Challenger is a 75-level event running 18–25 October 2026.
- The singles main draw was published .
- Marat Sharipov won the September 2026 Guangzhou Challenger, beating Pavel Kotov 6-0 6-3 in the final.
