Max Hans Rehberg #280Germany00 – 2Mees Rottgering #327Netherlands2

Rottgering's schedule since early August has been built entirely on North American hard courts, including Challenger events in San Diego and Columbus, so bounce and conditions in Fort Worth continue work he has been doing for two months. Rehberg's September was spent largely on clay, with a title in Italy and only one hard-court week in Spain before this event, which makes the surface switch a live variable on his side of the net. The difference is preparation, not a demonstrated hard-court weakness: Rehberg lists hard courts as his strongest surface and won three of four hard-court matches in October. Sample sizes on both sides are small, so this describes recent workload rather than a settled performance gap.

Rehberg's recent hard-court matches have followed a fixed pattern: a slow opening set, then a recovery.

All four of Rehberg's October hard-court matches went to a deciding set, and he lost the first set in each, averaging 3.25 games to 6.5 in openers. That makes an early deficit the expected shape of his week, yet he answered it by taking the second set in all four and winning three of the matches. Whether the recovery repeats is untested: his opponents that week ranged from No. 199 to No. 841.

Only one of Rottgering's 15 hard-court matches went the distance, and an average of 19.5 games points to short, decisive sets. Against an opponent whose four hard-court matches all ran to a third set, that contrast is the central shape question of the match. The same sample carries a warning: when Rottgering lost, he lost in straight sets, five times out of 15.

This is the most recent completed match Rehberg brings to Fort Worth, and it came on hard court, the surface of this first round, in a week where he had already won two three-setters. It places his current Challenger hard-court level close enough to hold match points against a top-300 opponent, while showing that his closing games in a deciding set went unrewarded. The limitation is scale: one match in Spain against the world No. 288, with no follow-up reporting of a physical problem after the defeat.
