A place in the Osaka main draw is on the line the next day: Preston, No. 86, against Jones, No. 122, both at career highs.

Preston owns the better wins but has played four games this week and had hip and back treatment eight days ago; Jones has the better game share across 15 matches but 4.9 double faults a match. Preston at 1.95 is the one quoted price that offers anything; Under 2.5 sets at 1.50 asks too much.

Context

The qualifying final is the last step before a main draw that opens the next day, so the winner has barely a night to prepare for a tour-level first round while the loser leaves Osaka with nothing from the week. Both Australians are seeded inside a field whose top seed, Sinja Kraus, is ranked No. 75, which is why a player of Preston's standing at No. 86 is in qualifying rather than the main draw. The stakes are identical for both, and the seed line says more about the depth of this qualifying draw than about any gap between them.
- Women's qualifying is scheduled for 17-18 October and the main draw for 19-25 October at the Morita Tennis Center Utsubo in Osaka
- Preston is seeded second at No. 86 and Jones eighth at No. 122, with Sinja Kraus the top seed at No. 75

That treatment came eight days before this qualifying final, in Preston's most recent completed match, and is the only reported physical interruption in her recent record. She finished the match and pushed the second set to a tiebreak, and no withdrawal or retirement has been attached to her since, so nothing establishes an ongoing problem. Its relevance is that she enters a two-match qualifying block with a recent mid-match treatment behind her, making her durability across consecutive days the item to watch rather than a settled limitation.
- Medical timeout for Preston with treatment on the hip and back area at 3-4 down in the second set
- Preston lost 6-3 7-6(8) to Ashlyn Krueger in Wuhan qualifying and was close to forcing a deciding set
ReportedSources checked 17 Oct 2026, 15:04 · Europe/Bucharest
Preston has played four games of singles in Osaka, so her opening win says almost nothing about her level this week and leaves her short of match rhythm on the venue. Jones played and finished a two-set match on the same courts a day earlier, giving her a clearer read on her own game and on the conditions. The difference in court time is real but modest, and four games is evidence only that Kaji could not continue, not that Preston is playing well or badly.
- Kaji took a medical timeout at 1-3 before the match ended with Preston ahead 3-1
- Jones beat Heather Watson 6-3 6-3 in the first qualifying round

Both players are at the best ranking of their careers in the same week, so neither arrives in Osaka on a falling number: Preston, 20, at No. 86 and Jones, 18, at No. 122. Rankings measure 52 weeks of results, and both career highs were built on hard courts, the surface used here. The 36-place gap therefore separates them by accumulated points across a season rather than by any recent divergence in form.
- Preston and Jones both earned career-high rankings in the week beginning 12 October 2026
