Context last updated 16 Oct 2026, 15:39 · Europe/Bucharest

Kartal, ranked No. 170, has reached her first WTA 1000 semifinal after six months out injured, and meets an Ostapenko who has knocked out Pegula and Shnaider in Wuhan.

Ostapenko is the marginal favourite, and at 2.1 she is the price worth taking; Kartal's 1.73 asks for more than her record supports.

Context

Ostapenko withdrew from the doubles quarterfinals, hours after finishing her singles quarterfinal, with a right forearm problem. The forearm is the load-bearing joint for her serve and forehand, the two strokes that generate most of her pressure, so any restriction there would cut into the pace she can hit through a deep returner. She did not retire from the singles match and has not been reported as weighing a singles withdrawal, so the size of the effect on the semifinal is not established.
- Withdrew from the Wuhan doubles quarterfinals
- Right forearm cited as the reason
- Remained in the singles draw for the semifinal against Kartal

Her win over Svitolina made her the first British woman apart from Johanna Konta to reach a WTA 1000 semifinal. At No. 170, she is the third-lowest-ranked semifinalist at a WTA 1000 event since the format began in 2009, behind Sloane Stephens in Toronto in 2017 and Victoria Azarenka in Miami in 2018. The quarterfinal lasted 2 hours 3 minutes and turned on the first break point of the deciding set at 5-4, which was also match point, so the final margin was narrower than the set scores suggest.
- Beat Elina Svitolina 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in the quarterfinals
- First WTA 1000 semifinal of her career
- Second career top-10 win
- Third-lowest-ranked WTA 1000 semifinalist since the format began in 2009

Kartal went more than six months without competition because of a back injury, returned in September, and has won five of her seven matches since. In Wuhan she beat Belinda Bencic 6-0, 7-5 and Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 6-0 before Svitolina, so her ranking of No. 170 sits well below the level she has shown this fortnight. The back problem is not reported as active, but four matches in five days is a heavier load than anything in her comeback so far.

- Returned in September and has won five of seven matches

Ostapenko beat second seed Jessica Pegula 2-6, 7-6(7), 6-3 on 14 October and 11th seed Diana Shnaider 7-6(6), 6-1 in the quarterfinals. Against Shnaider she trailed 2-5 in the opening set before taking it in a tiebreak and then conceded one game in the second, and against Pegula she recovered after losing the first set 2-6. The two wins show she is taking the tight sets that decide matches in this draw, although both required a comeback from a slow start.
