Second round on clay at the Catania Challenger, with a quarterfinal place at stake: Giunta (No. 390) meets qualifier Lagutin (No.

410). Giunta has the marginally better ranking and the stronger clay second-set record; Lagutin has started first sets better and finished his opener quickly. No priced selection was put forward, so there is no recommended bet — the match lean to Giunta is low confidence only.

Context

Giunta arrives with a 3h36 Palermo quarterfinal on 9 October and a three-set Catania opener, while Lagutin is match-sharp from qualifying and a straight-set first round. Both recent samples are on clay, so surface does not separate them, and the main sporting conditions are the workload difference and the contrasting set profiles.

Giunta beat a player ranked 162 places above him, so entering as an alternate did not hand him an easy first round. For this second round it means the highest-rated opponent in the immediate section is already out, and Giunta arrives with a completed three-set match behind him. The limitation is that one first-round win is a narrow base for reading form.
- Catania Challenger first round: fifth seed Henry Searle (ATP 228) lost to alternate Massimo Giunta (ATP 390).
- Giunta dropped the opening set 7-6(7) before winning the next two sets 6-2 6-2.

Giunta has spent substantially more time on court than Lagutin over the past week: a 3h36 quarterfinal followed by a three-set first round at Catania, against Lagutin's qualifying matches and a straight-set opener. Accumulated minutes of that kind can matter in a second-round match on consecutive days, especially against a qualifier who is match-sharp. The counterpoint is that Giunta finished his Catania opener 6-2 6-2 over the last two sets, so the Palermo match left no reported physical problem.
- Moro Canas beat Giunta 6-4 6-7(2) 7-6(10) in the Palermo quarterfinals and saved two match points.
- The match lasted 3 hours 36 minutes, and Giunta then won a three-set Catania first round on 13 October.
ConfirmedSources checked 13 Oct 2026, 15:43 · Europe/Bucharest
Giunta has lost more first sets than he has won across this 15-match clay sample, yet he is 9-6 overall and four of those wins needed three sets. That points to a player who can recover from a slow start rather than one who fades. The sample is small, so this reads as a tendency rather than a settled pattern.
- Giunta's 15 tracked clay matches, from 7 August to 13 October, include a 7-8 first-set record and a 9-6 overall record.
- His scorelines include four 2-1 wins and three 1-2 defeats, meaning four of his nine wins came in three sets.
A sixth successful qualifying run in a season shows Lagutin converts short-format qualifying at a high rate, and he now has main-draw wins to show for it. He arrives match-sharp after three matches in three days, against an opponent who played one match this week but a heavier previous week. The limitation is that qualifying wins over players ranked 616 and 650 are a weaker form guide than his first-round win over the higher-ranked Geerts.
- Lagutin, ranked 410, beat Oleksandr Ovcharenko 3-6 7-5 6-3 to reach the Catania main draw, his sixth qualifying run of the year.
- He began qualifying with a 6-3 6-0 win over Ignacio Parisca, then won his first-round match on 13 October.
