Context last updated 13 Oct 2026, 22:24 · Europe/Bucharest

Two lucky losers meet in the Wuhan second round, with a place in the last 16 and a projected meeting with Iga Świątek at stake.

Tararudee, at a career-high No. 60 after beating No. 32 Diane Parry, looks the slightly more likely winner, though she lands only 49.5% of first serves and averages 5.3 double faults, leaving Krueger a real chance. Two quotes offer something: Tararudee to win at 2.25 and under 2.5 sets at 1.55. Krueger at 1.65 does not.

Context

Both players lost their final qualifying matches and only entered the draw when main-draw places opened, so neither arrived with a direct-entry ranking cushion. Each converted the reprieve immediately: Krueger beat Shuai Zhang 6-3 6-0 and Tararudee beat world No. 32 Diane Parry 6-4 6-1, both in straight sets. Because the entry route and the length of the openers are similar, the lucky-loser status does not separate them; it frames this as a meeting of two qualifiers who have already found form in Wuhan.
- Both players entered the main draw as lucky losers after losing their final qualifying matches.
- Krueger, ranked No. 68, beat Shuai Zhang 6-3 6-0 in the first round.
- Tararudee, ranked No. 60, beat Diane Parry 6-4 6-1 in the first round.

Tararudee's 6-4 6-1 defeat of world No. 32 Diane Parry is the highest-ranked opponent she has beaten and only the second WTA 1000 main-draw win of her career. She reached the match after losing the final qualifying round to Caty McNally, so she had already won two matches in Wuhan before converting her lucky-loser place. Against a first-round opponent of Parry's ranking, it is the clearest single result of her season and the strongest available benchmark for her current hard-court level.
- Tararudee beat world No. 32 Diane Parry 6-4 6-1.
- It was the second WTA 1000 main-draw win of her career.
- She had lost the final qualifying round to Caty McNally.

She is at a career-high No. 60 and won WTA 125 titles in Austin and Istanbul this season, with WTA quarter-finals in Prague and Seoul. Those results show she has converted lower-tier form into main-tour consistency rather than a single run, and they place her marginally ahead of Krueger's No. 68. The ranking gap is the more meaningful marker here because both players are unseeded lucky losers with no protected status separating them.
- Tararudee is at a career-high ranking of No. 60.
- She won WTA 125 titles in Austin and Istanbul in 2026.
- She reached WTA quarter-finals in Prague and Seoul in 2026.

The winner here is drawn to face Iga Świątek in the third round, with Świątek scheduled to play Magdalena Fręch in her second-round match. That makes a place in the last 16 of a WTA 1000 event, and a first career meeting with Świątek for either player, the immediate reward for advancing. The path depends on Świątek winning her own second-round match, so this is the projected draw rather than a confirmed opponent.
- The winner of this second-round match is drawn to face Iga Świątek in the third round.
- Świątek's second-round opponent is Magdalena Fręch.
