Pre-match view

Context last updated 12 Oct 2026, 03:41 · Europe/Bucharest

Two qualifiers meet again in the Wuhan first round: Putintseva beat Sonmez in three sets in their only previous match, at the Australian Open in January.

Putintseva looks a narrow favourite given her stronger recent wins, while Sonmez's 12-match hard-court record is even and mostly straight sets. No reviewed price is worthwhile — 1.8 for Putintseva to win, 1.8 for the first set, 1.75 for the second and 1.5 for a straight-sets finish all ask for more than the slim case supports.

Context

The Wuhan first round brings the pair together for the first time since Melbourne, where their only meeting went three sets, 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-3 to Putintseva. That single hard-court match is the only direct evidence between them. The rankings have since inverted, with Putintseva now 82 and Sonmez 58, so the January result does not reflect current standing. One three-set match is a thin basis for reading the matchup, which makes the rematch more about the occasion than a reliable form guide.
- Putintseva beat Sonmez 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-3 in the 2026 Australian Open third round.
- Both players reached the Wuhan main draw through qualifying and were drawn against each other in the first round.
- The Melbourne meeting is the only previous match between the two players.

Putintseva has been the player more likely to be pulled into long matches.
Her 4-4 record in that window splits 2-0 twice, 2-1 twice, 1-2 three times and 0-2 once, and her first sets average 9.25 games against 9.375 in second sets. One retired match is excluded, so the eight-match sample is smaller than it looks. Zeynep Sonmez's 12-match hard-court sample runs the other way, with nine straight-set finishes including four 2-0 wins. The contrast frames the first round: Putintseva's matches tend to stretch, Sonmez's tend to close quickly.
- Hard-court set evidence for Putintseva covers 8 completed matches from 2026-08-03 to 2026-10-11.
- Five of those eight matches reached a third set; scorelines were 2-0 twice, 2-1 twice, 1-2 three times and 0-2 once.
- First sets averaged 9.25 games and second sets 9.375 games, with one first-set tiebreak.
- One retired match is excluded from the eight-match aggregate.
Bencic was the highest-ranked opponent she has beaten in the supplied recent list, and the win came in three sets. By contrast, the opponents Sonmez has beaten in her last six completed matches were ranked No. 95, No. 110 and No. 191, so the ranking numbers of the two players do not settle the first round. Putintseva also beat No. 35 Cristina Bucsa on 23 September and No. 73 Ashlyn Krueger in Wuhan qualifying. One strong win is a marker, not proof of a gap.
- Putintseva beat Belinda Bencic 4-6 7-5 6-3 on 2026-09-01.
- Bencic was ranked No. 12 for that match.
- The match sits inside Putintseva's 8-match completed hard-court sample from 2026-08-03 to 2026-10-11.
The exchange is the backdrop to the rematch: after beating Sonmez in Melbourne, Putintseva played to the Turkish supporters who had backed her opponent. No current dispute between the two players has been reported, and neither has commented on the incident ahead of Wuhan. It matters as atmosphere around a repeat pairing rather than as a known competitive factor. Nothing indicates it changes either player's preparation.
- After the Australian Open third-round win, Putintseva gestured toward the Turkish supporters backing Sonmez, cupping her ear, blowing kisses and dancing, which drew loud boos.
- The 2026 Australian Open meeting is the only prior match between the two players.
