Context last updated 12 Oct 2026, 04:12 · Europe/Bucharest

Two players ranked 290 and 282 meet in the Lisbon first round on clay, with Georgia Pedone holding the slightly better clay record and Martha Matoula the stronger second sets.

Pedone is the narrow pick to win, but none of the reviewed prices is worth taking: a straight-sets finish at 1.5, under 21.5 games at 1.8 and Matoula to win the second set at 1.75 all ask for more than the records support.

Context

Pedone has been the quicker starter of the two on clay, taking the opening set in nine of 15 matches and finishing seven wins in straight sets.
Pedone's 15 clay matches since 9 August 2026 produced 11 straight-set finishes, seven of them 2-0 wins, and she averages 19.9 games and 2.27 sets per match. Her opening sets are the stronger half: 9-6 with 5.2 games won to 3.7 lost. Matoula has needed three sets in five of 11 clay matches, so shorter matches favour Pedone if the pattern holds.
- Pedone's clay set record from 9 August to 8 October 2026: 7 wins 2-0, 4 losses 0-2, 3 wins 2-1 and 1 loss 1-2 across 15 matches.
- She averaged 19.9 total games and 2.27 sets per match, with a 9-6 first-set record.
Matoula is the more dependable of the two once a clay match reaches its second set, though she often needs a decider to get there.
Across 11 clay matches, Matoula's 8-3 second-set record sits well above her 5-6 first-set mark, and she averages 5.3 games won to 3.8 lost in second sets. That makes the second set a plausible place for her to hold her ground. Pedone is 9-6 in second sets herself, so the gap between them is small and the sample is narrow.
- Matoula's 11 clay matches from 29 July to 9 October 2026 include an 8-3 second-set record and a 5-6 first-set record.
- She averaged 5.3 games won and 3.8 games lost in second sets.
Matoula comes into the Lisbon event after winning one gold and one silver at the Mediterranean Games in Taranto during September 2026, the strongest recent results on her record. The multi-sport Games tennis field is far weaker than tour-level opposition, so the medals do not translate directly into expectations against a WTA-ranked opponent, and neither the discipline nor the level of the final is established here. The value for this fixture is that it shows she remained match-active and decorated at national-team level through late September rather than sitting out the weeks before Lisbon.
- Hellenic Olympic Committee post dated congratulating Martha Matoula on winning a gold and a silver medal at the Mediterranean Games in Taranto and welcoming her at a reception.
ConfirmedSources checked 12 Oct 2026, 04:08 · Europe/Bucharest
Matoula's serve is the volatile part of her clay game, with more than four double faults a match and fewer than one ace.
Matoula has served 44 double faults across 11 clay matches while hitting nine aces, a rate of 4.0 double faults and 0.8 aces per match. Those free points matter between near-equal opponents. Pedone's serve profile is far cleaner at 0.3 double faults per clay match, so Matoula's service games carry the greater risk.
- Over 11 clay matches from 29 July to 9 October 2026, Matoula averaged 4.0 double faults (44 total) and 0.8 aces (9 total) per match.
