Pre-match view

Context last updated 9 Oct 2026, 13:49 · Europe/Bucharest

De Minaur has not completed a match in Shanghai after retiring with a thigh injury in Beijing, while qualifier Sakamoto has won four matches here, including a straight-sets win over Rublev.

De Minaur is still the likely winner, but the margins and the opening set look closer than his ranking suggests. Four quoted prices offer something: Sakamoto +4.5 games at 1.55, over 23.5 games at 2.2, Sakamoto for the first set at 2.9, and Sakamoto to win the match at 3.5.

Context

The adductor problem ended his Beijing final and is the single biggest uncertainty in this fixture, because it affects the movement that underpins his return game and baseline defence. His Shanghai second round was a walkover, so he has not completed a competitive match since and there is no public evidence yet on how the injury responds to a full match. Against a big-serving qualifier the question is whether the injury restricts his ability to defend and extend rallies over three sets; the absence of completed match play since Beijing leaves that unresolved.
- Retired in the Beijing final against Djokovic
- Took a medical timeout and had his left thigh strapped before stopping
- Lost the first-set tiebreak 7-6(3) and retired after the opening game of the second set

This is the best result of Sakamoto's career and the first time he has reached the third round at a Masters 1000, so he arrives playing above the level his No. 137 ranking implies. It gives De Minaur an opponent with a proven ability to beat a seeded top-25 player in straight sets on this court, rather than a qualifier who has only survived lower-tier opposition. The result is still a single match, and Rublev's level on the day does not establish that Sakamoto can reproduce it against the consistency and return pressure of a top-10 player.
- Beat 23rd seed Andrey Rublev 6-4, 6-4
- Reached a Masters 1000 third round for the first time
- Came through qualifying before the main draw

The walkover removes a scheduled competitive match and gives De Minaur additional recovery time before facing Sakamoto, which matters given the adductor problem from Beijing. It also means he reaches the third round without a completed match in Shanghai, so his first sustained test on the surface comes against an opponent who has already played four matches here. That is a genuine trade-off between fresh legs and match sharpness rather than a straightforward advantage.
- Molcan withdrew before the scheduled second-round match
- De Minaur advanced by walkover
ConfirmedSources checked 9 Oct 2026, 13:47 · Europe/BucharestTennis Majorswww.tennismajors.com · 9 Oct 2026
Sakamoto has already played four completed matches in Shanghai, one of them a three-set qualifying final decided by a 10-8 third-set tiebreak, while De Minaur has not completed a match since 6 October. The accumulated workload is a real physical counterweight to the extra rest De Minaur received, and it is the clearest asymmetry in the build-up. A 20-year-old qualifier's recovery is usually strong, so the workload is a limitation to weigh rather than a decisive disadvantage.
- Beat Kyrian Jacquet 7-6(6) 4-6 7-6(8) in the qualifying final on 6 October 2026
- Beat Marco Trungelliti 6-3, 7-5 in the first round
- Has played four completed matches at the event
