Context last updated 6 Oct 2026, 03:57 · Europe/Bucharest

Two players without a win in their last two matches meet in the Shanghai first round, where Zizou Bergs is ranked higher but has lost six of ten hard-court matches and dropped the opening set in six of seven.

Bergs remains the likelier winner, so 1.33 gives nothing. The price with something behind it is Vit Kopriva to win at 3.3, while Under 2.5 sets at 1.4 asks for more than the record supports.

Context

Bergs's hard-court serving is strong once he finds rhythm, but the first set has been the hardest part of his recent matches.
Kopriva has taken three of eight first sets in his own hard-court best-of-three sample, so the opening set is closer to level than the 39-against-68 ranking gap suggests. If Kopriva wins it, Bergs would be working from behind, a position his recent hard-court record shows he rarely starts from.
- Bergs won 1 of 7 first sets in completed hard-court best-of-three matches between 27 July and 1 October 2026
- His first sets in that sample average 3.86 games won and 5.71 games lost
- He has won 77.0% of first-serve points on hard courts in this window
The draw sends the winner of this match straight to 32nd seed Ignacio Buse, who sits out the first round with a bye, and Buse's slot is the one that feeds into Carlos Alcaraz in the third round. For both players that makes the opening round worth more than its own points, because a seeded opponent is available in the next round instead of another unseeded one. The limitation is that the route is conditional: it applies only to whoever wins, and it says nothing about which of Kopriva or Bergs is better placed to win it.
- The Rolex Shanghai Masters first-round match between Kopriva and Bergs is scheduled for Wednesday 7 October 2026.
- The winner meets 32nd seed Ignacio Buse, who holds a bye into the second round.
- A third-round meeting with Carlos Alcaraz is the projected path for the winner of that second-round match.
- The event is played at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena in Shanghai, with main-draw play beginning on 7 October.

Neither player has won since the third week of September, so this first round brings together two men looking for a first win of the Asian swing rather than one in form and one out of it. The defeats differ in kind: Kopriva's came in a final-set tiebreak against Alex Molcan after entering through Beijing qualifying, while Bergs took a set off Jiri Lehecka in Tokyo before losing the decider. That difference is the useful part, because two identical-looking losing runs say more about the absence of recent wins than about who holds an edge.
- Kopriva's most recent match was a three-set defeat to Alex Molcan in Beijing qualifying .
- Kopriva has lost his last two completed matches.
- Bergs lost his Tokyo first-round match to Jiri Lehecka in three sets, winning the second set before losing the decider.
- Bergs has lost his last two completed matches.

Bergs's run to the third round of the US Open in early September, where two wins preceded a five-set loss to Botic van de Zandschulp, is the clearest recent evidence of his hard-court level. It sits against his Tokyo first-round exit on 1 October and gives his two-match losing run a different shape from a straightforward drop in form. The limit is timing and format: that run is a month old and came in best-of-five Grand Slam conditions, so it describes his hard-court level rather than his week-to-week form.
- Bergs reached the third round of the 2026 US Open.
- He won two matches there before a five-set defeat to Botic van de Zandschulp.
