Context last updated 6 Oct 2026, 00:35 · Europe/Bucharest

Ranked 45 against 93, but hard-court points won splits them by less than a percentage point (50.2% to 49.6%), and Bu's serve — 76% of first-serve points, 6.7 aces a match — is the reason.

He took a set off Djokovic in Beijing on 2 October; Van Assche lost 6-3 6-2 in Tokyo. Van Assche to win at 2.4 is the one quoted price that offers anything; Bu at 1.55 asks for more than this match supports.

Context

Bu's three-set loss to Novak Djokovic in Beijing on 2 October is his most recent completed match and the strongest current marker of his level on Asian hard courts, with the opening set taken and the second lost only in a tie-break. For this fixture it shows he can hold that level for more than two hours in a Chinese venue against elite opposition, and his own account of Djokovic's sustained intensity points to where the match turned. The limit is that he still lost and the third set went 6-2, so it is one performance rather than a sustained trend.
- Djokovic won 4-6 7-6(2) 6-2 after dropping the opening set to Bu in the China Open second round on 2 October 2026.
- Bu said Djokovic did not drop his intensity across more than two hours of the match while he felt exhausted.
- Bu beat Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-2 5-7 6-4 in the Beijing first round.

Bu's first serve is the part of his game that holds up on hard courts, and it is why his ranking understates how hard he can be to break.
When the first serve lands, Bu can hold cheaply and stay with a higher-ranked opponent; when it does not, the 46.3% second-serve figure gives Van Assche a way into his service games. The 15-match sample covers his whole hard-court window, so this looks like a settled pattern rather than a single good week.
- Bu Yunchaokete won 538 of 708 first-serve points (76.0%) across 15 hard-court matches tracked.
- He averaged 6.7 aces per match (100 in 15) while double-faulting 3.3 times per match (49 in 15).
- His second-serve points won was 46.3% (232 of 501) over the same 15-match sample.
Bu has been the stronger starter but the weaker finisher across this hard-court run.
Taking the opening set has not converted into matches: seven of the 13 went to a third set and six featured a tiebreak. If Bu wins set one here, the second-set record and the 25.5-game average suggest the match is still live rather than settled.
- Bu Yunchaokete's hard-court best-of-three sample covers 13 matches from 17 July to 2 October 2026.
- He is 8-5 in first sets (5.23 games won, 4.77 lost) and 5-8 in second sets (4.77 won, 5.38 lost).
- Seven of the 13 matches went to a third set, six included a tiebreak, and the average total was 25.46 games.
Van Assche's last singles match before Shanghai was a 6-3 6-2 first-round defeat to Arthur Fils in Tokyo, in which he won only five games. It is the closest recent hard-court reference for this fixture, but Fils is a top-10 player and a former champion of the event, so the margin reflects the opponent's level as much as Van Assche's own. He stayed in Tokyo for doubles afterwards, reaching the quarter-finals, so the singles defeat was not his final competitive outing before Shanghai.
- Fils beat Van Assche 6-3 6-2 in the Tokyo first round .
- Fils won the Tokyo title in 2024 and came through qualifying for the 2026 edition.
- Van Assche and Tabilo lost their Tokyo doubles quarter-final 7-6 7-6 .
