Pre-match view

Context last updated 6 Oct 2026, 00:28 · Europe/Bucharest

Hurkacz should be too strong for Duckworth in the Shanghai first round, but the adductor problem that ended his Beijing semifinal days earlier is the risk attached to a 1.38 quote.

Small edges also sit on over 2.5 sets at 2.3, Hurkacz 2-1 in sets at 3.5 and Hurkacz giving 2.5 games at 1.73, while 1.44 on him taking either set asks for more than his record supports.

Context

Hurkacz first reported adductor pain during the 4 October win over Karen Khachanov and could not finish the semifinal against Alex de Minaur, retiring at 4-6, 2-3. That leaves only two days before this first-round match and makes his ability to serve and move at Masters 1000 intensity uncertain. He said he intends to play Shanghai and will prepare physically, so a withdrawal is not confirmed, but there is no competitive evidence yet that the problem has settled.
- Hurkacz: 'Yesterday, during my match with Karen, I felt pain in my adductor. It was unfortunate. I managed to finish that match playing quite well. Unfortunately, I couldn't recover fully for today's match.'
- Hurkacz retired at 4-6, 2-3 in the China Open semifinal against Alex de Minaur .
- Hurkacz said he wants to play Shanghai and will do everything to prepare physically.

Shanghai's draw gives the winner of this first-round match a second-round meeting with Novak Djokovic, who enters with a first-round bye. Because the seeds were set from the 30 September rankings, Hurkacz, the 2023 champion here, is unseeded and must win a match before reaching the position his ranking would normally give him. That makes a meeting between the No. 34 and No. 64 players a significant springboard rather than a routine opener.
- Shanghai's seedings were determined from the 30 September rankings, leaving Hurkacz unseeded and starting in the first round.
- Djokovic's projected path lists the Hurkacz-Duckworth winner in the second round after a first-round bye.

Duckworth has not played a competitive match since 24 September after his withdrawal from the China Open qualifying draw, with organisers cancelling his scheduled match. That gives him a two-week rest window that contrasts with Hurkacz's five-match Beijing run, though it also means he arrives in Shanghai without recent tour-level rhythm. The withdrawal is not explained, so no physical reason should be assumed.
- Duckworth withdrew from the Beijing qualifying draw; Arthur Gea entered in his place and qualified.
- The scheduled qualifying match between Rigele Te and James Duckworth was cancelled.

Hurkacz brings the stronger recent record into this match but has not been an overwhelming front-runner from the first ball.
The split suggests Hurkacz's recent wins have often been built after the opening set rather than before it, and six of these 12 matches needed a third set at all. Against a lower-ranked opponent, that points to a match that could take a set to settle, with the middle phase the likeliest place for him to take control. It also means Duckworth's best window may be early, though sustaining it across two sets is a different task.
- Across 12 completed best-of-three hard-court matches between 20 August and 4 October 2026, Hurkacz won 7 of 12 first sets and 9 of 12 second sets
- Six of those 12 matches included at least one tiebreak
- The scorelines in that sample were five 2-0 wins, six 2-1 wins and one 0-2 loss, with one retirement excluded
