Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 7 Oct 2026, 02:41 · Europe/Bucharest

Tomic reaches his first Masters main draw in seven years and meets a top-40 opponent who has played twice in a month.

Arnaldi should win, but the 1.44 on him needs nearly 70% and a 6-7 recent record does not carry that weight. Over 24.5 games at 2.1 is the one quoted selection that measures up; a quick straight-sets finish is the main risk.

Context

Winning through qualifying gave Tomic two match wins on the Shanghai courts this week, while Arnaldi arrives from Tokyo with two matches in eight days. Tomic's 2026 results have come mostly against Challenger and qualifying-standard opposition, so this first round is the first real test of whether that form transfers to main-draw level. The trade-off is mileage: two matches on consecutive days into a first-round match at 33, against an opponent eight years younger and more than 140 places higher in the ranking.
- Tomic qualified for the Shanghai main draw, his first ATP Masters 1000 main draw since August 2019.
- He beat Timofey Skatov 7-5, 6-4 in the final qualifying round to seal the place.
- The qualifier placements put Tomic against Arnaldi in the first round.

The two Tokyo matches were his first since a first-round US Open loss to James Duckworth on 31 August, and they are the clearest recent gauge of his level on hard courts. Holding four set points against the world No. 3 reads better than his earlier losses in Cincinnati and New York, even though he lost that match in straight sets. He still arrives with only two wins from his last seven hard-court matches, so the improvement is recent rather than established.
- Arnaldi beat Rei Sakamoto 2-6 6-4 6-4 in the Tokyo first round.
- He lost to Carlos Alcaraz 7-6(6) 6-1, with Alcaraz saving four set points in the first set.
- That was his first competition since a US Open first-round loss to James Duckworth on 31 August.

Tomic, 33 and ranked 185th, has played a heavy run of matches through the Asian hard-court swing.
The sample points to a long, set-heavy first round in Shanghai rather than a quick two-set finish; his first sets were split 7-7 and averaged 10.29 games, and his second sets were stronger at 9-5. The counterweight is that eight of those 14 matches still ended in two sets, so a short match is well represented in the same window.
- 14 completed hard-court best-of-three matches tracked from 25 August to 6 October 2026
- Averages: 25 total games, 2.43 sets, five matches containing a tiebreak
- Set 1 record 7-7; set 2 record 9-5
- Scorelines: five 2-0, four 2-1, three 0-2, two 1-2; one retirement excluded
Arnaldi married Mia Savio in early October, in the break between his US Open exit on 31 August and his return to competition in Tokyo, and the ceremony combined Italian and Australian traditions. The news circulated through his Tokyo week and is the main off-court thread around him during the Asian swing. It adds context to a player who came into Tokyo after a month without matches.
- Arnaldi married Mia Savio in early October, before he began the Tokyo event.
- The ceremony was reported in international fashion coverage and referenced in a tour interview published the following week.
