Context last updated 6 Oct 2026, 01:02 · Europe/Bucharest

Demin, ranked 653, meets 324-ranked Santillan in the Wuning 3 second round after both won their openers on 5 October.

Santillan is the better server and the likely winner, but a 6-9 hard-court run and opening-round exits at Jingshan and Shanghai leave the case short of convincing. His 1.55 win price and 2.3 for a 2-0 win both ask more than that record justifies, and Demin's 2.3 is no bargain either, so nothing here is worth a bet.

Context

Santillan, a one-handed backhand player ranked No. 324, has spent the last stretch of the season on Chinese hard courts.
His hard-court sets have mostly been settled in two, averaging 21.3 games a match, and only two of the 15 featured a tiebreak. That pattern points toward a two-set match here rather than a long grind, though the five three-setters in the sample show he is capable of being dragged the distance.
- Santillan's hard-court set evidence covers 15 completed matches from 18 July to 5 October 2026
- Scorelines include three 2-0 wins, seven 0-2 losses, three 2-1 wins and two 1-2 losses
- Average 21.33 total games per match, with two matches containing a tiebreak
Demin, 21 and ranked No. 653, had not previously won a main-draw match at Challenger level, so a second-round place at Wuning marks a first at this tier after a season spent largely in lower-tier events. The straight-set win over Beibit Zhukayev, ranked about 150 places above him, shows he can compete at this level and gives him a first taste of a Challenger second round. It is only one match, though, and the step up in opposition comes against a player with far more experience at this tier.
- Demin beat Beibit Zhukayev 6-4 6-4 in the Wuning 3 first round
- The win is recorded as his first in a Challenger main draw

Santillan needed three sets and a deciding tiebreak to get past Castelnuovo, playing appreciably longer than Demin did in his straight-set opener. That is the clearest workload difference between the two heading into this round, though a rest day separates the matches. His opponent took treatment for a leg or knee problem while serving at 5-6 in the third set, so the closing tiebreak came against a player managing an injury. On its own the score reads as a competitive match rather than a dominant one for the higher-ranked player.
- Santillan beat Luca Castelnuovo 6-3 3-6 7-6(5) in the Wuning 3 first round
- Castelnuovo took a medical timeout for a leg or knee problem while serving at 5-6 in the deciding set
ReportedSources checked 6 Oct 2026, 01:00 · Europe/Bucharest
Santillan's previous two Challenger events both ended in opening-round defeats, including a 6-2 6-4 loss to Luka Pavlovic at Jingshan in his last completed match before Wuning. The win over Castelnuovo ended that run of early exits on the Chinese hard-court swing. It frames his recent form as uneven rather than clearly superior to Demin's, which matters because the ranking difference between the two is the main basis for expecting a favourite.
- Luka Pavlovic beat Santillan 6-2 6-4 in the Jingshan first round
- Bernard Tomic beat Santillan 6-4 6-4 in the Shanghai Challenger first round in September 2026
