Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 6 Oct 2026, 00:49 · Europe/Bucharest

Two players ranked four places apart open in Shanghai, and the winner gets Ugo Humbert.

Gea has the better hard-court season — 12 wins in 15 tracked matches and a clear edge on return — while Faria has the bigger serve and the lighter recent workload. Gea should win, but 1.45 to win the match, 1.5 for under 2.5 sets and 1.55 for Gea in either of the first two sets are all shorter than the evidence justifies; no quoted price is worth taking.

Context

Gea's last completed event was Beijing, where he came through qualifying as an alternate and won three matches without dropping a set before Hubert Hurkacz beat him 7-6(5) 6-7(5) 6-2 in the round of 16 . That is a meaningful form sample on the same hard-court swing and shows he can beat top-80 opposition from outside the seeded field. The counterpoint is workload: two qualifying rounds plus a two-hour-plus three-setter leave him with more matches and less recovery than an opponent who exited in straight sets.
- Came through Beijing qualifying as an alternate
- Beat Tomas Machac and Zhang Zhizhen without dropping a set
- Lost to Hubert Hurkacz 7-6(5) 6-7(5) 6-2 in the Beijing round of 16
ConfirmedSources checked 6 Oct 2026, 00:47 · Europe/Bucharest
Faria's most recent completed match was a 6-1 6-1 loss to Jaume Munar in the Tokyo round of 16, a one-hour defeat against an opponent outside the top 50. It sits alongside his ranking breakthrough the following week and is the last hard-court evidence before Shanghai, so it is the form reference that matters most for this fixture. The short match also left him fresher than Gea, whose Beijing run ran through qualifying and a deciding set.
- Beat Arthur Fery in the Tokyo first round
- Lost 6-1 6-1 to Jaume Munar in the Tokyo round of 16

Faria's serve is the one department where he clearly holds an edge over Gea in this matchup.
In a first-round Masters match, a serve producing 8.9 aces per match can keep Faria in touch even while Gea wins more points from the back of the court. The same action leaks 6.5 double faults per match, so the free points he concedes on second serve give a returner chances to break. Both figures come from the same 15-match hard-court window ending 2 October 2026, so they describe his recent level rather than a permanent trait.
- Across 15 tracked hard-court matches ending 2 October 2026, Faria averaged 8.9 aces per match (133 aces in total).
- Across the same 15-match sample he averaged 6.5 double faults per match (97 in total).
Gea carries the better hard-court results into this first-round match and wins more points in every phase except serving power.
Gea won 19 of 26 sets in that sample and averaged 2.36 sets per match, so his recent matches have tended to be settled quickly and in his favour. That pattern is why a straight-set win is the most likely single scoreline in this matchup. The counterweight is that Faria's 13-match hard-court sample has produced five deciders, so a longer match is well within range.
- Eleven completed hard-court best-of-3 matches tracked between 29 July and 2 October 2026.
- Six of those matches were 2-0 wins, with three 2-1 wins and two defeats.
- Gea won 19 of 26 sets in the sample, an average of 2.36 sets per match.
