Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 4 Oct 2026, 16:46 · Europe/Bucharest

Zhu has won the opening set in 10 of 14 hard-court matches to Matsuda's 5 of 15, which makes him the likelier winner of this first-round clash in Wuning.

The risk is that the same samples show Matsuda winning 9 of 15 second sets, and Zhu's recent wins have mostly come against lower-ranked opponents. Of the reviewed prices — Zhu at 1.44 to win, 1.45 for the first set, 1.50 for the second and Matsuda at 2.50 for the opening set — none stands out.

Context

Zhu has been the stronger starter in his recent hard-court record, though the sample covers only seven weeks.
Zhu's first sets have been the quickest part of his matches: 10 wins from 14, with 5.6 games won to 4.2 lost and only two tiebreaks. The caution is the sample — 14 completed matches across seven weeks — and the fact that his recent wins came largely against lower-ranked opposition, so the opening-set gap is a lean rather than a settled edge.
- Evan Zhu won the opening set in 10 of 14 completed hard-court matches (17 Aug - 1 Oct 2026).
- He averaged 5.6 games won and 4.2 games lost per opening set across those 14 matches.
- Two of the 14 opening sets went to a tiebreak.
Matsuda's matches have tended to start badly and steady, so an early deficit has not been decisive for him.
Across 15 completed hard-court matches, Matsuda won 5 opening sets against 10 defeats, then flipped to 9 wins and 6 losses in the second set, with three tiebreaks in each set. In a best-of-three format that means dropping the first set has not stopped him extending matches, though his 8-7 record shows the recoveries have not always become wins.
- Matsuda won 5 of 15 opening sets and 9 of 15 second sets in completed hard-court matches (2 Aug - 28 Sep 2026).
- He averaged 4.2 games won to 5.6 lost in opening sets, and 5.1 won to 4.9 lost in second sets.
- Three tiebreaks in opening sets and three in second sets across the 15 matches.
Zhu's most recent result against a higher-ranked opponent is a reminder that his strong run has its limits.
That was a completed match, not an abandoned one, and it came after a competitive opening set against an opponent ranked well above this field. It is the counterpoint to his 9-5 sample: he has beaten lower-ranked players and been stretched by better ones, and Matsuda at No.475 sits between those groups. A first set going Zhu's way would not by itself settle the match.
- 1 October 2026: lost 1-2 to world No.183 Alex Bolt (7-6, 4-6, 2-6), 13 games to 18.
- The match was completed, not a retirement.
- Bolt is the highest-ranked opponent in Zhu's supplied recent match log (No.183).
