Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 6 Oct 2026, 02:49 · Europe/Bucharest

Andreescu is the higher-ranked player but arrives after a three-week gap, while Smith has won two matches in Samsun this week.

Andreescu should still advance, though less comfortably than her odds suggest. Smith to win the second set at 4.25, the first set at 4.75, the match at 6 and with a 4.5-game head start at 2.6 are the quoted selections where the odds leave room; Andreescu at 1.12 to win and 1.36 for a 2-0 win ask for too much.

Context

The layoff is the main unknown around Andreescu here. Her ranking still identifies her as the stronger player, but she has no competitive tennis since a straight-set defeat in Guadalajara, while Smith has completed matches in Samsun this week. Rust is a possibility rather than a fact, since a three-week break can also leave a player fresher.
- Andreescu's last recorded match was a 6-4, 6-3 loss to sixth seed Cristina Bucsa on 13 September 2026 (home recentMatches[0]).
- Her available record shows no completed match between 13 September and this 6 October first round.
Andreescu's recent hard-court results split sharply: both wins came by a 12-3 game margin, while her four defeats included margins of -5, -1, -8 and -4 games. The sample is only six matches and contains no tiebreaks, so it describes match shape at this level rather than a settled trend. It matters here because Smith has completed two competitive matches in Samsun this week.
- 2-4 record across six hard-court matches, 3 August to 13 September 2026 (home setEvidence).
- Scorelines: 2-0 twice, 1-2 once, 0-2 three times; average 19 total games per match.
- Both wins came by a 12-3 game margin; no tiebreaks in the six matches.
The opening set is the strongest part of Smith's recent hard-court profile, though the 13-match sample comes largely against lower-ranked opposition and includes two tiebreaks. Andreescu, by contrast, won just 3 of 6 first sets across her own six-match hard-court window, which is a small counter-sample in Smith's favour.
- Smith won 9 of 13 first sets on hard courts, 25 July to 5 October 2026 (away setEvidence).
- First-set games: 5.38 won, 4.85 lost on average, with two tiebreaks in 13 first sets.
- Her hard-court record in that window is 9-4 across 13 matches.
This is Smith's freshest evidence and the opposite of Andreescu's position: she has completed a match this week while the higher-ranked player has not competed since 13 September. One 6-1, 6-4 win against a No. 385 opponent is thin support for a form claim on its own, but it shows she is match-tight going into the first round.
- Smith beat Dalila Jakupovic (No. 385) 6-1, 6-4 on 5 October 2026 (away recentMatches[0]).
- Five games conceded across two sets in her most recent completed match.
