Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 4 Oct 2026, 16:17 · Europe/Bucharest

Sakamoto sits 538 ranking places higher and should win this qualifying opener, most likely in two sets, but 1.22 to win the match and 1.30 for either of the first two sets ask for more than his record supports.

The prices carrying an edge are all on Hong: 3.25 for the first set, 3.2 for the second, 4.25 for the match and 6.5 for a 2-0 win.

Context

No availability, injury or venue news was supplied, so the conditions that shape this match are the ranking gap, Sakamoto's 51.3% total points won and 12.1 aces a match across 14 tracked matches, and Hong's four wins in his last six completed hard-court matches.

Sakamoto's first serve is the standout stroke in this qualifying pairing.
Those serve numbers show Sakamoto holding comfortably, with 59.9% of first serves landing and 12.1 aces a match across a 14-match window. The same window shows a softer side: he saved 26 of 56 break points, under half, so Hong will get looks if he can stay in enough return games. Hong has no tracked serve or return figures of his own, so how he handles that serve is unknown.
- Sakamoto averaged 12.1 aces per match over 14 tracked matches (169 aces in total).
- He landed 59.9% of first serves (688 of 1149) and won 76.7% of first-serve points (528 of 688).
- He saved 46.4% of break points against him (26 of 56) in the same 14-match window.
- He converted 39.4% of his own break points (37 of 94).
Hong's recent match shape is the main reason a short qualifying opener looks plausible.
The 14-match sample spans two years and one retired match has been removed, so it describes shape rather than a current rate. Within it, Hong's completed matches have been short: only two went to a decider, and he averaged 21.7 games and 2.14 sets. That points to a two-set match unless Sakamoto's serving lapses or Hong's level drops.
- Hong's 14 tracked hard-court best-of-3 matches ran from 3 September 2024 to 12 September 2026, with one retirement excluded.
- His scorelines in that sample read: six 2-0 wins, six 0-2 losses, one 2-1 win and one 1-2 loss.
- He averaged 21.7 total games and 2.14 sets per match.
- First sets averaged 10.79 games with five tiebreaks.
Sakamoto's 538-place ranking edge over Hong does not make him untouchable in this round.
The Nam result is a single completed match rather than a pattern, and Sakamoto's wider 9-6 record still points his way. It does show that a far lower-ranked opponent can beat him, and Hong arrives with four wins in his last six completed matches. Treating the ranking gap as decisive would ignore that evidence.
- Sakamoto lost to Ji Sung Nam, ranked 818, on 8 September 2026, 6-7 4-6.
- The match was played on hard court and Sakamoto won 10 games to Nam's 13.
