Context last updated 4 Oct 2026, 19:23 · Europe/Bucharest

A Shanghai qualifying opener between No.

84 Safiullin and No. 180 Galarneau, with Safiullin fresh from beating Cobolli and pushing Rublev in Beijing, though Galarneau won their only meeting. Safiullin is the likely winner, but his short prices — 1.15 to win the match, 1.25 for the second set — ask for more than that. The worthwhile prices sit on the margins: Galarneau +2.5 games at 3.5, Galarneau to take the first set at 3.5, over 2.5 sets at 2.75, Galarneau at 5.5 and Safiullin 2-1 at 3.75.

Context

Safiullin reached the China Open round of 16 immediately before Shanghai, taking a straight-set win over a top-10 opponent on the same hard-court swing. A three-set loss to Rublev on 3 October leaves him a short turnaround into the Shanghai kickoff, so the Beijing run is both a form input and a workload consideration. The Rublev match went against him after he took the opening set, which means his recent form is real but came with a late-match reversal just two days before this fixture.
- Safiullin defeated Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 6-2 in the China Open third round on 1 October 2026.
- Safiullin lost to Andrey Rublev 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the China Open round of 16 on 3 October 2026.
- Both matches were played on hard court in Beijing.

The only completed meeting between the two went to Galarneau, a three-set qualifying win on grass in June 2026. It is the reference point for how the matchup has played out, and it came on a surface far removed from Shanghai's hard courts, where both players spend most of their season. The result gives Galarneau a positive head-to-head starting position, while the surface change limits how far it can be read into this fixture.
- The meeting took place on 7 June 2026 in Stuttgart qualifying.
- Galarneau won 6-4, 6-7, 7-6.
- The match was played on grass.

Safiullin, the world No. 84, has been the stronger player in second sets on hard courts through this window.
That split matters in a best-of-three: dropping the opening set has not stopped Safiullin from taking charge, and his average second set finished 5.5 games to 3.5, a clear margin rather than a coin-flip. The 5-5 first-set record also shows the opening set has been genuinely competitive for him, so an early Galarneau lead would not be a surprise. The sample is 10 matches, so this is a short-run pattern rather than a season-long rate.
- Home setEvidence, hard courts, 10 completed matches from 18 August to 3 October 2026: first sets 5-5, with an average of 5.2 games won to 4.7.
- Home setEvidence: second sets 8-2, with an average of 5.5 games won to 3.5.
- Home setEvidence: one of the 10 matches included a tiebreak.
Galarneau's last completed event was the Chengdu Open, where he beat Elias Ymer 7-5, 7-6 in qualifying before losing the qualifying final to Lloyd Harris. He reaches Shanghai with no main-draw win on the recent hard-court swing, so his competitive evidence sits at qualifying level. That makes the Chengdu run a continuity marker for his hard-court form rather than evidence of a step up against main-draw opposition.
- Galarneau beat Elias Ymer 7-5, 7-6 in Chengdu Open qualifying on 22 September 2026.
- Galarneau lost the Chengdu Open qualifying final to Lloyd Harris.
