World No.

4 Coco Gauff meets 16-year-old junior No. 1 Sun Xinran, ranked No. 582, in the Beijing third round — a first career meeting. Gauff's 13-2 hard-court record over her last 15 completed matches makes her a clear favourite, most likely in straight sets. No quoted price is worthwhile: Gauff to win at 1.03, the first and second sets at 1.08, straight sets at 1.15 and 2-0 at 1.18 all ask more than the form supports.

Context

Sun, 16 and ranked No. 582, has won two Beijing main-draw matches without dropping a set, including a straight-sets win over world No. 35 Cristina Bucsa. That result is her strongest tour-level reference point and is why this third-round meeting carries real competitive content rather than a purely ceremonial debut. The qualification is that her first-round win came when Eva Lys retired at 6-1, 3-0, and almost all of her 2026 match volume has come in lower-tier events on clay, so her hard-court sample is thin.
- Sun beat Eva Lys after a retirement at 6-1, 3-0 in the first round and Cristina Bucsa 6-4, 7-5 in the second round to reach the Beijing third round.

Sun won the US Open junior title a few weeks before her tour-level debut in Beijing and arrived as the world's top-ranked junior. That marks the level she is graduating from and explains why this run is being treated as a breakthrough rather than a routine wildcard appearance. Junior success does not translate directly into tour-level hard-court results, so it qualifies her trajectory more than her current form.
- Sun won the US Open junior title shortly before making her tour-level debut in Beijing as the world's top-ranked junior.

Gauff, the world No. 4, has been a fast starter across this hard-court sample.
Thirteen first sets from fifteen completed hard-court matches is a large share, and the 5.6 games she averages in those sets shows she is usually ahead rather than scraping through. Only one of those opening sets reached a tiebreak. For this match it sets the likely shape: Gauff ahead after one set, with Sun needing a fast start to change it.
- Last 15 completed hard-court matches (9 August–3 October 2026): Gauff won the first set 13 times, averaging 5.6 games won and 3.5 lost in set one, with one first-set tiebreak.
Gauff's most recent completed match in Beijing was a three-setter against a player outside the top 60.
The most recent reference point is a set dropped to an opponent outside the top 60, so Gauff's recent hard-court form is not a straight-line procession. Mirra Andreeva (No. 5) also took her to three sets on 9 September, and Elena Rybakina (No. 1) beat her in three on 10 September. It is the strongest live argument against expecting a clean, quick afternoon, even against a No. 582 opponent.
- 3 October 2026: beat Maria Camila Osorio Serrano, ranked No. 66, 7-6, 4-6, 6-2, winning 17 games to 14 in a completed three-set match.
