Alana Smith #425United States22 – 0Dalila Jakupovic #3430

Both players reach this match on October 5 after winning a Samsun qualifying opener, so each arrives with match play on the same courts. Smith needed three sets to close out Lachinova, while Jakupovic finished in straight sets, leaving Smith with the longer and less efficient opener of the two. That difference in sets and time on court is the one asymmetric workload signal the openers offer heading into the next round. A single qualifying win is limited evidence of current level by itself, and neither opener tested either player against a higher-ranked opponent.

Smith, ranked 488, is the lower-ranked player and the one who needed three sets to win her Samsun qualifying opener.

Smith won six games across the two sets against an opponent ranked 188 places above her, so this is a clear loss to a higher-ranked player rather than a collapse. It is one result inside a 15-match tracked window that stands at 9-6, which is why it is best read as recent form rather than a settled level. The Samsun match is listed as indoor and this defeat came on hard, so any comparison of conditions is loose.

Smith has one win over a top-200 opponent in her listed matches, which is more than her ranking of 488 would suggest.

Avdeeva, ranked 195, is the best-ranked player Smith has beaten in the listed matches, and Smith took it in straight sets after edging the opening tiebreak. It shows she can beat opponents far above her own ranking, which matters in a match where the gap to Jakupovic is around 100 places. The result is from August, and the following day in the record she lost 5-7, 0-6 to Susan Bandecchi (141), so the evidence points to an uneven level rather than a strong run.
