China

Sun, 16, is the reigning US Open junior champion and the ITF junior world No. 1, and she is making her WTA 1000 main-draw debut in Beijing on a wildcard. Nearly all of her recent matches have come at ITF level on clay, so her senior hard-court profile is barely established.

Context last updated 2 Oct 2026, 03:53 · Europe/Bucharest

A 16-year-old home wildcard ranked No. 582 meets a top-40 seed who has barely won half her hard-court matches this season.

Bucsa is the stronger player and should win, but her 7-8 hard-court record and three defeats in four mean it is not a formality. At 1.45 Bucsa to win is the price worth taking; Bucsa at 1.5 for the first set also holds a small edge, while the games and sets totals ask too much and the 2.0 on a 2-0 win is fair.

Context

Sun is a wildcard ranked No. 582 whose first tour-level match ended with Lys retiring at 6-1, 3-0, so the result itself is not a completed win. The nine consecutive games she won before the stoppage are the clearest evidence that her junior level translates to tour pace. She has almost no senior hard-court record and most of her 2026 matches came at ITF level on clay, so her ranking is a weak guide to what she will produce in this round.
- Sun, ranked No. 582, entered the China Open main draw on a wildcard and was playing her first WTA main-draw match.
- Eva Lys, ranked No. 102, retired with a foot injury with Sun leading 6-1, 3-0.
- Sun won nine consecutive games from 0-1 in the first set before Lys stopped.

Bucsa's ranking and seed reflect a breakout 2026: a first WTA singles title, a career high of No. 30 in March, and a doubles title in Guadalajara in September. That is the reference point for reading her as a No. 27 seed against a 16-year-old wildcard ranked No. 582. The counterweight is that her three most recent singles matches are defeats, so a career-best season sits alongside a softer current run.
- Bucsa's first WTA singles title came in Mérida in 2026.
- Her career-high singles ranking of No. 30 dates to 16 March 2026.
- She and Nicole Melichar-Martinez won the Guadalajara doubles title in September 2026 as the top-seeded pair.

Bucsa's hard-court sample covers 15 completed matches between 28 July and 25 September 2026.
Bucsa's first-set numbers (8-7) and second-set numbers (5-10) point in different directions across the same 15 matches. For this round it means a fast start is the likelier route to a comfortable scoreline, while a drawn-out match is a real possibility if Sun stays level into a second set. Ten of those 15 matches finished in straight sets, so the second-set dip has not stopped her closing matches out, but it is also where six of her defeats were completed.
- Bucsa's hard-court set record in the tracked sample (28 July-25 September 2026, 15 matches) is 8 wins and 7 losses in first sets and 5 wins and 10 losses in second sets.
- Her second sets average 4.3 games won to 5.3 lost, against 5.0 won to 4.9 lost in first sets.
- Ten of the 15 matches finished in straight sets (four 2-0 wins, six 0-2 defeats) and five went to a deciding set.
Sun's tracked record covers 14 matches with 7 wins and 7 losses, with one retirement excluded from the sample.
Sun's recent results come from clay, so they say little about how she handles a hard court against a top-40 opponent. The record holds no senior hard-court sample to lean on: one completed match, a 2-6 1-6 defeat on 28 February 2026. That cuts both ways, because nothing here proves she struggles on this surface at tour level, and nothing shows she copes with it either.
- Sun's six most recent tracked matches, 9-26 August 2026, were all on clay; she won three and lost three.
- Her clay wins in that run included 6-1 6-1 over Nadja Mladenovic and 6-2 6-3 over Mariia Masiianskaia; her defeats included 0-6 3-6 to Elena Milovanovic and 4-6 6-7 to Varvara Panshina.
- Her only completed hard-court match in the record is a 2-6 1-6 defeat on 28 February 2026, and her hard-court set data covers that single match.
- Her 14 tracked matches overall show 7 wins and 7 losses.
