Context last updated 27 Sep 2026, 23:43 · Europe/Bucharest

A top seed against the No. 397 player on clay should be a comfortable opening round for Gustavo Heide, and he is the likelier winner.

The complication is the first set: Hernan Casanova has won nine of 13 on clay, Heide only six of 11. Heide to win at 1.3 asks too much; Casanova to take the first set at 2.75 is the one quoted price that holds up.

Context

The Wawrinka result is Heide's standout recent win and it came in a Davis Cup tie, giving him a positive result to carry into a home Challenger on clay. The match was played on hard court rather than the surface used in Curitiba, so it speaks more to his confidence and competitive form than to how he will handle these conditions.
- Gustavo Heide defeated Stan Wawrinka 4/6 7/6(4) 6/4 in the Davis Cup, winning in a third-set comeback
- Heide said he had endured difficult weeks and needed to recover confidence before his closing run of the season
- Heide arrives at the Curitiba Challenger off that Davis Cup win over Wawrinka

Heide is 7-4 in his last 11 completed clay matches, and the Brunold result is one of those four defeats.
Heide carries the top seed and a No. 120 ranking into this first round, yet this September 11 match shows a much lower-ranked opponent can take him apart when his level drops. It was a completed match, not a retirement, so the scoreline stands as a full result. It is a caution against treating the ranking gap to Casanova, at No. 397, as decisive on its own.
- Mika Brunold, ranked No. 259, beat Gustavo Heide 6-2 6-1 on clay on 2026-09-11
- Heide won three games across the two sets in that completed match
Casanova's clay record in this window is 8-5 across 13 completed best-of-three matches.
The strongest part of Casanova's clay game has been the start: he has been ahead after set one in nine of those 13 matches. That contrasts with Heide, who has won only six of 11 first sets on the same surface. The sample spans Challenger-level and lower opponents and excludes two retirements, so it is a narrow base rather than a settled pattern.
- Casanova won 9 of 13 first sets in completed clay best-of-three matches between 2026-06-26 and 2026-09-22
- Four of those 13 clay first sets went to a tiebreak, with an average of 5.7 games won and 4.8 lost
- Two retirements are excluded from that 13-match clay sample
Comesana's withdrawal moved Heide to the top of the Curitiba draw and matched him with an unseeded opponent in Casanova. Seeding shapes draw position and expectations rather than the tennis itself, but it places this opener among the matches a home crowd will expect the higher-ranked Brazilian to control.
- Gustavo Heide will be seed No. 1 after Francisco Comesana's withdrawal
- Main draw first round: Gustavo Heide (1) v Hernan Casanova
