Jack Pinnington Jones #172United Kingdom00 – 2Thomas Faurel #323France2

Pinnington Jones is the higher-ranked player in this first-round match and arrives off the most one-sided scoreline in either player's recent record.

That 6-1 6-0 followed a three-set win over Moez Echargui on 1 September and a three-set loss to Otto Virtanen on 26 August, so it is one clean result rather than a run of them. A 340-ranked opponent should not offer him the same freedom, and his two listed hard-court defeats in this window came against players ranked 103 and 184.

Pinnington Jones's hard-court sample is the larger of the two on offer in this first round, and it describes matches that run long rather than short.

Four of the nine matches contained at least one tiebreak, which points to sets that go deep rather than one-sided ones. Three of the nine, though, were straight-set defeats, so the same sample shows how quickly a match can get away from him. Two retirement-affected matches are excluded from the nine, so this is a completed-match picture only.

Faurel is the lower-ranked player here and this is his most convincing recent result on the surface.

Grenier sits 51 places above Faurel at 289, so a 6-4 6-4 win is real evidence that he can handle a higher-ranked opponent on a hard court. It came the day before his 1-6 2-6 loss to Mark Lajal, which shows how little carries over inside a five-match sample. On its own it is one good day rather than a settled level.

Faurel's most recent hard-court outing was his heaviest defeat of this window and came in his final match before this first round.

Lajal is ranked 197 places above Faurel, so a one-sided result against him is not a shock in itself. Taken alongside the 6-4 6-4 win over Grenier the previous day, it shows how wide his day-to-day range has been across five hard-court matches. As a single match it says little about how he will play here, and it is not evidence of any current physical problem.
