Context last updated 25 Sep 2026, 22:24 · Europe/Bucharest

An all-Turkish semifinal in Ankara guarantees a home finalist: Berfu Cengiz, ranked No. 307, against 19-year-old college player Deniz Dilek, No.

786. Cengiz has won all three of her matches in straight sets and is the likelier winner, but Dilek has beaten the top seed and won 12 of her last 15 hard-court matches. Three sets at 2.40, Dilek to win at 2.60, and Cengiz to win by five games or more at 2.40 are the prices that hold up.

Context

Her own account, given three days before the semifinal, is the clearest current signal on Cengiz's physical state, and it sits alongside a ranking slide to No. 307 from a career-high No. 190 reached in December 2024. She has still won three matches in Ankara without dropping a set, so the problem has not visibly restricted her this week, and the quarterfinal against Han Shi was settled 6-3, 6-4. The consequence for this fixture is that her durability across a long match is the open question rather than her form, because her opponent has already played two three-setters here. That difference in time on court is the concrete reason her fitness is a live variable rather than background detail.
- Cengiz said she is battling injuries and that the victory was very important to her
- The remark followed a 7-6(2), 6-2 second-round win over Ayşegül Mert
- She added that she had reached the quarterfinals in her own country for the first time

The win matters because of the gap it bridged: Gasanova is ranked No. 195 against Dilek's No. 786, and the deciding set reached 5-1 against her before she won six straight games. The scoreline therefore understates how close she came to going out, and it follows a first round in which she removed the top seed. For this fixture it says her level on these courts is well above her ranking, which is why the 479-place gap to Cengiz is a weak guide. The counterweight is workload: two of her three matches here went to a third set, while Cengiz has won all three in straight sets.
- Dilek won 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 against Gasanova
- She trailed 1-5 in the final set and took the last six games
- It is the first WTA 125 semifinal of her career

Sierra arrived as the leading seed and ranked No. 91, 695 places above a player whose season had been spent in lower-tier hard-court events. That result is what makes her later defeats of Çağla Büyükakçay and Gasanova read as a pattern rather than one upset. In this semifinal, it means Cengiz faces an opponent whose three wins have all come against players at or near the top 200 despite a ranking outside the top 750. The limit on the evidence is that the run covers only a handful of days, with no prior result at this level to measure it against.
- Dilek beat the top seed Solana Sierra 6-3, 6-3 in the first round
- Sierra is ranked No. 91

A first semifinal at this level is the stake for a 26-year-old ranked No. 307, well below the No. 190 career high she set in December 2024, and she has framed the week in those terms herself. The same context explains why her clay-heavy 2026 record should not be read as her current surface: she has kept three hard-court matches in Ankara without dropping a set, including a quarterfinal against a top-250 opponent. The caveat is that her route has been the smoother of the two, with three straight-set wins over opponents ranked between No. 165 and No. 867, so the hard-court evidence is recent rather than deep. Nothing in the quarterfinal remark addresses the semifinal opponent or how she expects the match to be played.
- Cengiz beat Han Shi 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals
- She said this will be her first semifinal and that she was very excited
- She described the last one or two years as very difficult
- She said she hopes to win the trophy
