Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 24 Sep 2026, 02:23 · Europe/Bucharest

The defending champion against the in-form Grand Slam finalist: Mertens has not completed a match since 5 September, while Chwalinska has won both Singapore matches without dropping a set.

Mertens still looks the likelier winner of the quarter-final, but 1.45 asks for more than her evidence supports. Chwalinska at 2.75 is the one quoted price that pays over the odds.

Context

Mertens has not played a competitive singles match all week and her last completed match was three weeks ago, so she arrives in the last eight with fresh legs and no current read on the indoor hard court at the OCBC Arena. Chwalinska, by contrast, has played two matches in the same arena. The open question is which effect dominates: a rested player without recent match rhythm, or an opponent who has been on court but for only about two hours. The walkover says nothing about Mertens's own fitness or form, and nothing this week indicates she is carrying a problem.
- Mertens received a first-round bye as the fourth seed
- Krejcikova withdrew with a lower-back injury before their scheduled second-round match
- Mertens advanced by walkover without playing a singles match in Singapore
- Her last completed match was a three-set US Open third-round loss to Naomi Osaka on 5 September

The defence is what gives this quarter-final stakes beyond ranking points: Mertens is the only player in the match with a trophy on these courts, and a win keeps that defence alive in a week where the field has been thinned. Familiarity with the OCBC Arena and its indoor hard court is a real but modest benefit, because the surface offers clean, consistent conditions rather than anything unusual. She is also still without a title in 2026 after losing the Monterrey final in August.
- Mertens won the Singapore title in 2025
- She is seeded fourth in the 2026 edition
- The 2026 event is played at the same venue and on the same surface as her title run
ConfirmedSources checked 24 Sep 2026, 02:20 · Europe/Bucharest
Two straight-set wins give Chwalinska roughly two hours of competitive time in the exact conditions of this quarter-final with no accumulated fatigue. The games count also shows she has not been dragged into a decider or a long match this week. A 6-0 6-1 win over a lower-ranked opponent is not direct evidence about facing a top-20 seed, so the value here is rhythm and clean ball-striking rather than a proven step up in level.
- Chwalinska beat Sramkova 6-4 6-2 in the first round
- Chwalinska beat Oliynykova 6-0 6-1 in 59 minutes in the second round
- She has not dropped a set in Singapore
- She has won 24 games and lost seven across the two matches

The Paris match is the only direct evidence of how the two match up, and it went decisively to Chwalinska. It was played on clay, the surface that carried her to a Grand Slam final, so it describes her level on her strongest ground more than it predicts this fixture indoors on hard courts. Mertens has completed one match since early September, which leaves the current version of both players less settled than the score from May implies.
- The pair have met once before, at Roland Garros in 2026
- Chwalinska won 6-4 6-0 in the second round
- The 2026 Roland Garros match is their only completed meeting, and both have since entered this event
