Context last updated 24 Sep 2026, 03:11 · Europe/Bucharest

Cengiz is through two rounds at home without dropping a set, but Shi has the deeper hard-court record and is the favourite.

Shi's 1.44 to win asks more of her than that record supports, and the same goes for 1.50 on her to take the first set. The price worth taking is Cengiz +3.5 games at 2.00, which covers a narrow Shi win or any Cengiz victory.

Context

Cengiz described an ongoing physical struggle immediately after her second-round win, without naming an injury or taking treatment on court. She has still won both Ankara matches in straight sets, so nothing in the scores indicates the problem is shaping her results this week. With a full rest day before the quarter-final, any restriction on her serving or movement remains unquantified. The statement is her own and is the only public indication of her condition.
- Cengiz beat Ayşegül Mert 7-6(2), 6-2 in Ankara
- Cengiz said she is fighting through injuries and that the victory meant a great deal
- Cengiz has completed both Ankara matches without a retirement or medical timeout
ReportedSources checked 24 Sep 2026, 03:09 · Europe/Bucharest
For this quarter-final the pattern points to Shi closing matches in two sets more often than not, which puts the emphasis on Cengiz staying in touch early if she is to force a decider. The record also shows the route is not always smooth: three of the 15 matches went the distance, so a longer afternoon is possible. Two of Shi's three defeats came with a set dropped, and she also took 11 of 15 second sets in the sample.
- Shi's hard-court record from 25 August to 23 September 2026 is 12-3 across 15 completed matches
- Nine of the 15 finished 2-0, three finished 2-1 and three were defeats
- She won 11 of 15 second sets, averaging 5.7 games to 3.3
The milestone is a first at home rather than a ranking breakthrough, and it gives this fixture a clear local storyline: the winner here reaches a home semi-final. She remains ranked outside the top 300, so the occasion does not by itself indicate a shift in her level. It does confirm Ankara as her best result of this stretch, after two defeats in her September events before arriving.
- Cengiz beat Ayşegül Mert 7-6(2), 6-2 to reach the Ankara quarter-finals
- Cengiz described the result as her first quarter-final in her own country
- The quarter-final against Han Shi is the next round
ConfirmedSources checked 24 Sep 2026, 03:09 · Europe/Bucharest
Cengiz carries the home support she described after her first-round win, and one more victory would put a Turkish player into the semi-finals of the country's WTA 125 event. Shi has already played in that environment once this week, beating Turkish player Ayla Aksu, so the setting is not unfamiliar to her. Nothing in either player's results shows the crowd deciding a match to this point.
- Five Turkish players reached the second round of the WTA 125 Ankara Open
- Four of them were paired against each other, guaranteeing at least two Turkish quarter-finalists
- Shi beat home player Ayla Aksu in the second round
- Cengiz said the atmosphere at her first-round match was very good
