Context last updated 23 Sep 2026, 15:28 · Europe/Bucharest

Shang, the 2024 champion here, holds the better hard-court numbers and a 6-1 record in Chengdu, but Mannarino is ranked 78 to 253 and won their only meeting in 2023.

A narrow Shang win is the likeliest single result. The worthwhile prices are on Mannarino: 3.2 to win, 5.25 to win 2-0, and 2.6 to win either the first or the second set. Shang at 1.35 offers nothing.

Context

The Rennes defeat is Mannarino's most recent completed match, seven days before this first round, and it came in straight sets against a qualifier ranked more than 500 places below him. He played a Challenger in the week before Chengdu rather than another tour-level event, which fits a season in which he has fallen well outside the top 50. The wider form is not uniformly poor: at the US Open on 31 August he won a five-set match after losing the first two sets, and he won his opening Rennes match 6-2 6-4 two days before the loss. One Challenger week is thin evidence, but it is the freshest read available on his current level.

Chengdu is the only event where Shang has converted a tour-level week into a title, and his record there is far stronger than the rest of a 2026 season in which he has completed few matches. A win over Mannarino would in all likelihood bring the defending champion Alejandro Tabilo, unbeaten across his last seven matches at the event, in the round of 16. That raises the return on a first-round match Shang enters on a wild card. The 6-1 record spans the 2024 and 2025 editions and includes qualifying wins, so it is not a pure main-draw sample.

Mannarino, the higher-ranked of the two at No. 78, owns the only head-to-head result between them.
That 2023 match is the clearest counterweight to Shang's stronger recent hard-court numbers: Mannarino lost the first set 1-6 and still won in three, so a fast Shang start has been survived once already. It is also a single match from more than three years ago, predating every stat in both players' current samples, so it speaks more to how tight the matchup can be than to present form.
- Only recorded meeting between the two: 23 March 2023
- Mannarino won 1-6 6-4 6-2, losing the opening set 1-6
Mannarino, at No. 78, carries a 3-6 hard-court record through this seven-match window.
Five straight-set defeats mean that when Mannarino has lost on hard courts recently he has not taken a set, so a long, tight match rests on him winning rather than on a narrow loss. His two wins in the same window were straight sets as well, so these matches have been decided quickly in both directions. Seven matches is a small sample, so this is a shape to weigh rather than a settled habit.
- Hard-court best-of-three sample: 7 matches, 28 July to 17 September 2026
- Scorelines 2-0 x2 and 0-2 x5; total sets average 2.0
- First sets 2-5, second sets 2-5; 3 of the 7 matches contained a tiebreak
